Theme: Playing with Water
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids! Summer break is here, what better time to explore new activities.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
This week’s collection contains a series of water-themed activity sheets for children to choose their own learning adventures. Learn about the different forms water can be found in, and keep a weekly weather chart.

       Water
What is water? Watch this short video clip from Iowa PBS to learn about water and our planet’s water cycle. Next go out in your yard or neighborhood and find some water. How many different places did you find water? Did you ask a friend to search with you?
Grades 1-2
Water is a wonderful way to inspire your child’s curiosity. Find playful activities in this water-themed collection. Experiment with ice cubes with Ready Jet Go!, make a water plan with Cyberchase, or make popsicles with Ruff Ruffman.

    The Importance of Water
Plants need water to survive! This video clip from KET Education explores why plants need water, and the signs plants give when they've had too much or too little water. Also learn about the water cycle, and how to conserve water in a water barrel.

  Summer Recipes
Tomato Salsa
Tomatoes are in season, why not make some fresh tomato salsa! This simple recipe uses plum tomatoes, lime, jalapeno, shallots, chili powder, and cilantro [the jalapeno chili is optional]. If you use the jalapeno be sure to wear disposable gloves when preparing as they can irritate your skin. Note – remember to let the tomatoes drain in a colander for 30 minutes before mixing the salsa. If not drained, the tomatoes will make your salsa watery. If you want to make your own tortilla snack chips, check out this recipe.
