Theme: Apples and Pumpkins
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids! Apples and pumpkins are ready for picking this month! Learn more about both these fruits in the activities below.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Join Kylie on a visit to an orchard in Kentucky. Learn how apples are grown, picked, and sorted for sale in the community. Closer to home, check out your local farm markets or grocery stores to find fresh apples.

Apple Picking Game - Curious George
Fall is apple harvest time! Play this apple picking game from Curious George. Did you count all the apples? Shop for some local apples and share a healthy snack with a friend.

Grades 1-2
Peak fall foliage is usually best in October. Watch this short video from the Brooklyn Botanical Garden to learn why leaves change color in autumn. Later take a walk in your yard or local park to find a variety of leaves. At home draw pictures of leaves and color them to match what you see in your yard or community.
    Pumpkin Study
Can you answer - is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable? Watch this video from Iowa PBS to learn about pumpkins. When finished viewing, click on Wander and Wonder: Pumpkin Study Activity to follow the activity. You will need adult help if you decide to carve your own pumpkin. After carving fresh pumpkins, you can rinse and pat dry the seeds, then toast them in the oven for a tasty snack.

America’s Test Kitchen Young Chefs’ Club
Pumpkin Bread with Chocolate Chips
Sugar and spice make this pumpkin bread extra nice. Use canned pumpkin puree in this recipe. You will need adult help gathering ingredients and baking the bread in the oven. Remember to let the pumpkin-sugar mix cool before adding the eggs. If it’s too warm, you will have scrambled eggs!
