I hope you find this helpful!
Barbara Lukas, Family Learning Coordinator
Theme: Animals
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids! Animals can be found everywhere on the planet – deserts, forests, water, the arctic, and in most urban areas. Check out some animal activities below.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Watch this story from Between the Lions, introducing young children to the world of snails. They are slimy, slow-moving creatures that live in a shell, prefer damp places, eat leaves, and have one foot but no legs. This story is based on Are You a Snail? by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries. When you finish watching this story, draw pictures of snails.

       Snail Snacks
After you have watched the snail story above, experiment with making your own snail snacks. Follow these simple instructions from PBS Parents. You will need help collecting and cutting the vegetables. How many snails did you make? Did you share them with others?

Grades 1-2
Butterflies play an important role in pollinating the plants, flowers, and vegetables that we need on the earth. Look into this butterfly craft project from Elinor Wonders Why to learn about the parts of a butterfly.  Then follow the directions to make your own pair of butterfly wings.
    Nature Cat Memory Game
Play this Nature Cat memory game with friends or family members. Just print the cards and cut them out.

America’s Test Kitchen Young Chefs’ Club
Strawberry Shortcake
This recipe from Young Chefs’ Club includes fluffy biscuits, tart strawberries, and sweet whipped cream - the pieces of a perfect dessert. You will need adult help gathering the supplies and baking the biscuits in the oven. A tip to make your own buttermilk – use 1/3 cup milk and 1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice. Let the buttermilk mix sit 5 to 10 minutes at room temperature before using.
