Theme: Garden Season
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids!  Gardening encourages reasoning, initiation, planning and organization skills. Use spring as an excuse to do a little gardening with your children.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Create a Daisy’s Garden from Nature Cat. Print the sheets, and cut out the plants and insects. Use glue or tape to build your summer garden on construction paper or cardboard.
       Seedlings in Egg Carton Cup
Growing seedlings in an egg carton is a great way to start your summer garden. Start by recycling a cardboard egg carton, then purchase potting soil and seeds. Think about simple plants such as radish, cucumber or lettuce seeds. Put one seed in each carton cup, and remember to water them!

Grades 1-2
Learn about the basics of botany and plant growth by growing an herb garden. Ask for adult help cutting and poking holes in the milk cartons or soda bottles. At a garden center look for small herb plants to grow. You can plant more than one in each container. Did you label each herb?

    Edible Dirt Cup
Our world is filled with plants and animals that live and burrow in dirt and soil. Get your hands dirty as you learn about the different types of soil and make an edible garden “dirt” cup. You will need chocolate pudding, cookies, and graham crackers. Did you add coconut grass and gummy worms?

Gardening With Kids
There are many scientific concepts you can discuss with your kids when planting and tending to a garden. Topics range from nutrition, measurement and soil science. Check out these tips on how planting a garden can affect not only your child’s body, but also their brain and soul.
