Theme: Music
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids!  Music activities help the body and the mind work together in young children. Explore some fun music activities this week.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Create a simple music shaker with these directions from Pinkalicious. Print the paper cone to start, then collect dried pasta, beans, or rice for inside. Be sure to seal the cone tightly, or the materials will leak out! Maybe make one for a friend?

       Step by Step Dance
Follow your shaker craft with a dance routine! Use the dance movements on the Pinkalicious sheet, or better yet, make up your own steps. Pull out some of your favorite music, and get dancing. Did you invite friends to join you? Make it a party!

Grades 1-2
Try this simple maracas craft using recycled supplies from home. You will need cardboard egg carton sections, popsicle sticks, and dried pasta-rice-beans to put inside. Suggestion - after gluing the two egg carton sections together [with the popsicle stick and dried pasta inside], wrap colorful duct tape around the entire maraca to prevent leaking. Then dance the afternoon away.
    Make a Peruvian Siku Flute
Create a siku flute to play and dance with family and friends, the Peruvian way! The siku flute is a Peruvian instrument that makes music by blowing through long and short tubes. You can use old markers, being sure that an adult removes the insides for you. Or, look for the largest diameter straws you can find – maybe at a craft or party supplies store. Be sure to cut each tube a different length.

Mixed Berry Smoothie
After music making and dancing you may be ready for a quick healthy snack. Try a mixed berry smoothie. All you need is frozen fruit, a banana, yogurt and orange juice. You may need adult help using the blender. Did you make enough to share with friends?
