Theme: The Science of Color
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids!  Color makes changes very easy to see, and color mixing can be magical. Explore some colorful activities below.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Make a simple lava lamp using household supplies! This activity is not only a feast for the eyes but also a terrific science activity. Experiment with different food colors in your jar. Did you create a new color when you mixed colors?
       Rainbow Celery
Learn about capillary action with this simple and colorful celery coloring experiment. The small "vessels" in the celery stalks carry the water and color to the leaves, like the way blood travels through your body. All you need is celery, food coloring, and jars of water. Did you mix any colors to create a new shade?

Grades 1-2
Today, YOU are the scientist with this experiment. The question: Does a food’s color affect what we think of its flavor? Answer this question by having your friends and family taste two samples of juice—one plain and one dyed with red food coloring. Will they realize that both juices are the same? Or will the color make them think that they’re drinking something else? Apple juice and food coloring are the two ingredients. Remember not to tell them what they are drinking until the experiment is over.

    Walking Water
This fun science activity introduces basic concepts of physics and gravity. With a just a few ingredients, you will be able to see water “walk” up paper towels then down into an empty jar. Did you expand the experiment by adding more jars of different colored water? What happened?

“Berry” Juicy Science
Fruit is naturally sweet and juicy, but is there a way to make it even sweeter and juicier? In this experiment, you’ll find out whether mixing fruit with sugar does anything other than make it taste even sweeter. Purchase fresh strawberries from a store or local farm market. You will need a little sugar to do this experiment. Make sure to keep the “control" separate from the experiment. What did you find out?
