Theme: Ecology Part 2
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids!  Continue exploring your local ecology with activities involving birds, soil, and trees.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Explore nature with this activity from Elinor Wonders Why. Print the Illustration Sheet and glue it onto cardboard. Then go on an object hunt around your yard or neighborhood. Study your objects and decide how to sort them. How many things did you collect?

       Observing Birds in Nature
Take time to observe birds in your backyard, in a neighbor’s yard, or in a nearby park. What do you see? Print out observation sheets from Cat in the Hat, and use crayons or pencils to draw your observations. Maybe staple the pages together to make an Observation Booklet!

Grades 1-2
What happens to a pile of old leaves outside when you add a dash of time, maybe some worms, and a healthy splash of moisture? Compost! Make your own soil perfect for your garden. Gather a 2-liter plastic bottle, some dirt, newspapers, and compost materials. You may need adult help cutting the plastic bottle. Follow the directions from Nature Cat to begin filling your bottle. Remember – no dairy or meat products in the composter!
    Trees and our Environment
Learn about trees with this Plum Landing video. Watch students plant trees, and learn how trees are important to our earth. Maybe take a neighborhood or park walk to observe trees in your community.

Kansas City Style Barbecue Sauce
As temperatures rise and summer is near, families think of barbecue. Make a Kansas City style barbecue sauce – thick, sweet and tangy. You will need adult help mixing and cooking the sauce. What will you use it on? Chicken, ribs, or even hamburgers?
