Theme: Winter Animals
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids!  Learn about polar bears, feed birds, and create owl crafts below.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Using simple items and these directions from Dinosaur Train, create a bird feeder that birds will be chirping about! Experiment with raisins, birdseed, and nuts on the feeder. Make sure all foods are unsalted! Try peanut butter or honey to attach the seeds. Where did you hang the feeder?

Nature: Polar Bear Slip and Slide
Polar bears live in climates with ice and snow. Learn how polar bears are able to move around to find food. Then create your own experiment to see what things slip and slide on ice.

Grades 1-2
It's Igloo Time! An igloo is a shelter made of snow and ice. It keeps the heat in, and the cold wind and snow out. No snow? No problem! Using these directions, build a model igloo with clay. You will need cardboard and clay. If you prefer, you can make your own clay from the included recipe. Did you make a snowman and polar bear with your igloo?

    Owl Bag Puppet
During the winter months owls fly around looking for mice or other small creatures to eat. Make your own owl bag puppet following these directions. You will need a small paper bag, construction paper, googly eyes, scissors and glue. If you find craft feathers at the store, glue them on your paper bag!

Cinnamon Malt Popcorn
Make your own Cinnamon Malt Popcorn winter snack. After popping, save some without the seasonings, so you can give it to the birds. Malted milk powder is usually found in the same section as powdered milk. If you prefer, substitute Ovaltine chocolate malted milk powder for a chocolate flavor. Be careful when opening the bag with the popped kernels—there will be a lot of steam in the bag! Did you invite friends to share your snack?
