Theme: Making Family Traditions
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids! Summer break is starting, what better time to some explore new activities.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Talk about traditions with your family members and with some earlier family generations. Use this family traditions collection to gather family recipes, and plan celebrations with new special menus.

       Donkey Hodie Flying Flapjacks
Get cooking with a new family breakfast tradition from Donkey Hodie with this fun and simple recipe for Flying Flapjacks! Measuring, mixing and pouring are all great ways to learn the basics of cooking while practicing fine motor skills. Did you add blueberries to your flapjacks?
Grades 1-2
Many families have a favorite tradition handed down from earlier generations. Discuss some of your family traditions using these sheets from this traditions-themed activity collection.

    Tasting and Texture Experiment
You get to be the scientist in this edible experiment from the Young Chefs’ Club! Your research question: Does changing the texture of a food also change its flavor? In this activity, you’ll use the same ingredients to make salsas with two different textures. Then recruit some volunteer taste testers to find out if the texture affects the flavor. Ingredients are simple – canned diced tomatoes, jalapeno, garlic, cilantro leaves, and a lemon. You will need adult help with the food processor or blender. What were your results? Did your tasters realize they were eating the same recipe?
