Theme: Math, Measurement and Counting
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids! Math is part of our everyday lives. Explore some fun math activities below.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Combining math with art is a fun and simple way to play number games. Follow these easy steps to make your own finger paint. Be sure to measure the cornstarch and water carefully! You will need adult help using the stove. Let your finger paint cool, then begin painting numbers and shapes. What colors did you use?

       Museum of Tens Game
Check out this Curious George counting game. Skills include counting, adding and subtracting. Can you do all three? Ask a friend to play with you.
Grades 1-2
Build your own adding game with simple craft supplies. Gather a large poster board, cardboard tubes, paint or markers, tape, basket or container, and lots of small objects [paperclips, bottle caps, marbles, erasers, etc.]. Ask an adult to help you cut up a large cardboard box if you don’t have poster board. Follow the directions to attach the cups to the poster or cardboard. Be sure to cut the bottoms out of the cups before attaching!
Measuring This and That: Cat in the Hat style

Visit this Cat in the Hat activity to make two different types of measuring tools. If you don’t have cardstock, a piece of cardboard will work. Use these tools to measure and compare all sorts of things around your house.

Carrot Ginger Soup
Cooking involves measuring and counting skills. Make this easy carrot ginger soup to warm up in cold winter weather. Soup ingredients are simple – carrots, stock or broth, ginger and milk. You can decide what garnishes to add to the finished product. Did you make the milk yogurt sauce to drizzle on top?
