Theme: Science Experiments
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids! Summer months can be the perfect time to explore with science experiments.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
For some slimy squishy fun try this slime experiment from Nature Cat. You will need an adult to help you with the ingredients and the heating of your slime mix. What color will you add in your slime? Will you mix two colors? Can you make extra for a friend?

      Summer Reading
Warm summer afternoons can be a good time for reading. Print this PBS Kids Summer Reading Chart to keep track of all the books you read. Your local library has hundreds of children’s books for you to choose. Maybe you will check out a science experiments book, a cook book, or find a new author to read.
Grades 1-2
Follow this Ruff Ruffman activity to create your own set of rainbow popsicles. Experiment with blending different fruits, freezing them, and creating layers in each popsicle. You may need adult help collecting the fruits and using a blender. What fruits did you use? Wooden craft sticks make good handles in the popsicle container.
    Design Challenge: Keep Your Cool
Ice cubes melt slower in a container that has insulation. Can you design a container that keeps an ice cube from melting for at least 30 minutes? Using simple house hold supplies with these directions, create an insulated container. Follow with a test of your design with an ice cube. Did it keep your ice cube cool?

 Summer Recipes for Kids
This summer explore healthy cooking with fun recipes for children. Visit local stores and farmers markets finding fresh fruits and vegetables to use throughout the summer. Check out each weekly newsletter this summer exploring easy recipes to make and eat together.
Celebrate the 4th of July with this Fire Cracker Hot Dog recipe. It’s quite simple with hot dogs, canned biscuit dough, wooden skewers, and 1 egg. You may need adult help threading the hot dog on a skewer. Did you make the star topper for each skewer?
