April 5th-9th Family Activities Newsletter

Welcome to week 38 of the WMHT Family Activities Newsletter.
This weekly family newsletter is providing resources for children’s growing and learning throughout the spring months.
The Learn Along Bingo theme for this week is Living and Nonliving Things.
I hope you find this helpful!

Theme: Learn Along Bingo: Living and Nonliving Things
Welcome to Learn Along Bingo with PBS Kids! This week we learn plants, animals, and insects all have external parts. Children will practice describing their color, size, shape, and texture.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Suggestions this week focus on the difference between living and nonliving things. Use these activities to discuss what living things must have to grow. Maybe you can visit a store and buy seeds to start your own garden, and follow the Nature Cat Plant Journal.

What Are Plants - Young Explorers
Watch this interesting short video from Iowa PBS, to see different types of plants, how they grow, and how we benefit from plants. Maybe you will begin planning a spring garden and decide what you might put in it.

Grades 1-2
Using these suggestions discuss how animals look and live differently. Do some research on desert animals versus arctic animals. What did you find out? You can also try the Ruff Ruffman texture hunt, searching both indoors and out.

    Adapted to Survive-Nature at Home
This Nature at Home activity discusses how animals have adapted to live in certain environments. Use the chart to discuss how animals live in your neighborhood.

ZOOM - Biome in a Baggie
A biome is an ecological community, like a rainforest, desert, or prairie. Try this ZOOM experiment to see how plants grow in different environments. You will need a plastic bottle, pebbles, a large plastic bag, soil, and something to plant.
