Theme: Strawberry Moon
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids!  Tuesday, June 14 at 7:52 a.m., is the Strawberry Full Moon. Try a variety of craft activities relating to the moon, and make a strawberry yogurt parfait.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
As the moon travels around the Earth, the sun always lights up on one side. The moon appears different sizes depending on the moon's position. The view of the moon appears to change every few days. Create your own booklet of moon phases. Print the information and booklet from SciGirls. Cut along the lines, and staple the booklet pages together. Make sure to write the date and draw what the moon looks like on each page.
       Moon Rock Painting
The “soil” on the surface of the moon is called regolith. Regolith is a fine powder made from rock fragments and pieces of volcanic glass. In this moon rock activity, you can recreate the texture of regolith and then use it to paint a paper moon. A stop at the craft or Dollar store should provide white chalk, grey paint, glitter and a paintbrush. Make sure to seal the zip lock bag when you crush the chalk!

Grades 1-2
Have you wondered why the moon looks different throughout the month? Make a moon phase box and uncover the mystery behind the changing shape of the moon. Supplies include a cardboard shoe box, black paint, golf ball, ruler, and flashlight. Be sure to use the observation journal to record the changes you see in the night sky.

    Blast Off Jet Pack
Use recycled materials by making this pretend blast off jet pack. Collect 2-liter plastic bottles, grey paint, and heavy cardboard. To substitute for webbing - cut slits in the cardboard, then thread strong rope or cord through the slits to make the arm straps. If your paint doesn’t stick to the plastic bottle, try a few drops of liquid dish soap in the paint. Add the red and orange flames, and you are ready for blast off!

Yogurt Berry Parfait
Make yogurt and berry parfaits for breakfast, lunch, or any time snack. Ask for adult help collecting yogurt, honey, granola, and berries. You can mix any seasonal berries together. Remember make layers of each food. What did you put on top?
