At the University of South Carolina, each student's well-being, academic success, and collegiate experience are paramount. Our faculty and staff work to ensure we offer every student the unique support they require to excel both in and out of the classroom.

Every month, using the Family E-News, we strive to provide Carolina families with a central resource to assist in supporting their students. Year-round, the Parents Annual Fund provides support to programs addressing critical student needs and enhances high involvement areas. Your support of the Parents Annual Fund enables Student Affairs staff to provide immediate assistance to address challenging situations requiring financial resources. In April, the university will celebrate its annual day of giving, "Give 4 Garnet." I hope you will join me in supporting the Parents Annual Fund! You can read more about the programs supported by this important fund a little further down in this newsletter.

We are grateful for your partnership in supporting UofSC students. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the Office of Parent & Family Programs by phone (800-868-6752) or email ( ). We're here to help!

Student Health Services: Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)
The University of South Carolina continues to closely monitor the spread of COVID-19 caused by Novel Coronavirus, following the guidance of both the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. Since the virus is spread through human-to-human contact, we all can play a role in helping mitigate exposure and ensuring our community remains as healthy as possible.

Therefore, if any students, faculty or staff travel to a country with a CDC travel  Warning - Level 3 they are asked to self-quarantine  at their permanent residence  for 14 days before they can return to campus. Currently,  China, Iran, Italy and South Korea  meet this criteria; however, additional countries could be added to the CDC list in coming days and weeks. While this may be a personal inconvenience for some, it’s essential to minimize the risk to our entire campus community. Self-quarantine, regardless of whether an individual feels sick or not, involves avoiding close contact with others and restricting movements. If people develop new symptoms or a high fever, they should alert their healthcare providers.

If your student is planning on traveling for Spring Break, they are encouraged to visit the   CDC website  before and during their trip to ensure they can return back to campus as scheduled. We are counting on each member of our Gamecock family to remain vigilant and informed, to adopt healthy practices and avoid unnecessary travel to areas that are experiencing high levels of COVID-19.

Please note that international travelers may also be subject to airport screenings, border restrictions and assessment by state health officials upon their return.

The university remains in frequent contact with students studying abroad and will keep them updated on any changes that may affect their travel plans and academic schedules.

Last week, we shared some practical tips on how to remain healthy and avoid spreading illness if you are sick.

If you are looking for ways to support your student, consider the Parents Annual Fund

In the past year, the Parents Annual Fund has provided financial support in two critical areas:
  • STIR (students taking initiative and responsibility to reduce high-risk behavior-alcohol and other drug use); and
  • mental and emotional health programs.
As we are all painfully aware, the challenges in these two areas are substantial. The Parent Annual Fund has been impactful by providing additional staff and resources to the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention and Education (SAPE) and Counseling & Psychiatry

Additional annual areas of support include:
