ʻImi Naʻauao
August 2021

In these challenging times, the Hawaii Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (HASCD) is committed to leaning into our mission to serve as a resource to all educators of Hawaii. We are happy to share our newsletter, 'Imi Na'auao, which means to seek enlightenment, wisdom and education.
Embracing family engagement is an equity mindset—one where educators see families as cocreators, regardless of what they look like, what language they speak, who they are, says expert Karen Mapp.
When young learners & their families have access to hands-on #STEM activities, they are more likely to see themselves in those fields in the future.
Choice is certainly not the only way to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in education, but it is a powerful and practical vehicle for helping our classrooms be learning environments that are inclusive for all children.
Now, with the tumult of remote learning in the rearview mirror (hopefully), what can—and should—that engagement look like as students return to full-time in-person school this fall?
We must acknowledge that our students have personal & collective histories that intersect with the lessons in our classrooms. These experiences shape how students engage with us, even during assessment.
Only 47% of educators felt they were properly prepared to engage families during COVID-19. Here's how to create more opportunities & pathways to practice family engagement.
The experience of learning can be like a four-way tug-of-war between content, process, structure, & tools. Here’s how to balance to make sure all ropes get equal pull.

Through her work and joy as a founder of the Hawaii Distance Learning Forum, she’s met so many amazing educators!
Eric Sheninger (@E_Sheninger) shares about his recent work with Moanalua Middle School and how he has taken the traditional Response to Intervention (RTI) pyramid of supports and added how personalized learning strategies could be implemented to ensure better learners are getting what they need.

Welcome back to school! Although we all weren't expecting the start of school to be this way, I am amazed as the resilience and tenacity that school administrators, teachers and support staff have in order to make the opening of school a success! HASCD is here to help and we hope that we can provide quality professional development opportunities throughout this school year. Be on the lookout for events in our newsletters and emails.

“Whatever we accomplish is due to the combined effort. . . In my organization there is respect for every individual, and we all have a keen respect for the public.”
- Walt Disney

I wish you a wonderful school year. We will get through this together. Keep making magical moments for our students... They truly deserve no less than the best!

Sincerely yours,
President, Hawaii ASCD
