Rethinking Raising Animals in the Family Farm
By Donna Reynolds
|
Small family farmers involved in animal agriculture and consumers who purchase their meat believe the farmers are producing healthy, nutritious, and much-needed food. Both farmer and consumers believe no one cares more about the animals than the farmers do, and both hope the family farms will continue to be handed down to the next generations so communities will still be able to eat this family farm meat.
So what’s wrong with this way of thinking? Plenty! And yet what can be done…?

Thank You and Welcome!
Thank you so much to those who donated and/or joined Northwest VEG last month, and welcome (back) to all new and renewing members! You joined just in time to get the member discount for Compassionate Thanksgiving, which is next month. (It’s not too late to join.) To all donors, we deeply appreciate your support, and you are welcome to all our events whether you are a member or not.

The Tofurky Trot is coming up on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 23rd and many volunteers are needed to make this event a success. What follows is an interview with Donna Reynolds, first-time (but not the last time!) Tofurky Trot volunteer.
What made you decide to volunteer for the Tofurky Trot?
I had heard about the Tofurky Trot and about Oaks Park and was always curious what both were like. Then I saw that NW VEG needed 60 volunteers in order to put on the event! Also, since becoming an ethical vegan, I was tired of thinking of Thanksgiving in such a sad and negative way and wanted the day to be connected with a more positive and uplifting event.
What role did you sign up for?
I wanted to get a small feel for what the course was like, and it looked like the weather was going to cooperate, so I volunteered for an outdoor job as a human course marker/detour preventer. I was placed at a “Y” junction where I directed and encouraged people to stay on the proper course.
What was the best thing about it?
There was really no single “best thing” about the Tofurky Trot, although the incredible sunny weather that day in late November in the Pacific NW is right up there near the top. I liked the colorful leaves on the trees and the crunchy ones underfoot. I liked seeing all the well-behaved dogs trotting by. I liked the fun costumes and funky clothing worn by some of the runners/walkers. And I really liked the upbeat and happy mood that so many people exhibited—even at the latter half of the Trot!
Would you recommend it to others?
Sure! It was nice being involved in a win-win-win situation where the Trotters get great exercise, the sanctuaries and NW VEG get great support, and I get a great feeling seeing hundreds of people who also believe that Thanksgiving should be celebrated with kindness and compassion towards animals and not by having them appear on our dinner plates.
Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Yes, I would recommend that if you’re at all curious about the Tofurky Trot like I was, try volunteering. There are a variety of positions available, both inside and outside, plus beverages and snacks to enjoy. But be careful, or you may just get hooked and end up starting a new and wonderfully compassionate Thanksgiving tradition!

NW VEG is excited to announce our fiscal sponsorship of Vegan Scouts of Portland! Vegan Scouts of Portland is an inclusive scouting program for Portland-area vegan kids, emphasizing inclusive community, awareness of and civic action on issues of animal welfare, environment, health, and social justice, and building skills needed to prosper and be a positive force in our changing world.
They recently held their fall kickoff event at Hail Snail last Saturday. Vegan children (or those exploring veganism) were invited to play, create, and learn with other Portland vegan families as the organization got off the ground. Kids made an easy, tasty, healthy bean salad together, voted on vest colors, created badge designs, and made connections with other interested Vegan Scouts. If you missed our first event, but still would like to join as members or get involved as a volunteer, please fill out our interest form.

Golden Green Split Pea Soup
By Linda Tyler
the Gracious Vegan
This is one of those comforting soups that helps you relax. It's not trying to impress—it just tastes good and wholesome, and that's enough. The combination of green and yellow split peas gives it a golden-green glow, and the vegetables provide welcome chunkiness and variety.
Makes 9 cups (6 servings)
(See Instant Pot instructions below.) In a large Dutch oven or soup pot, water-sauté the following ingredients until the onion is soft and transparent, 5-8 minutes. (Start with 1/4 cup water and add more if you need it.)
- 1/2 medium onion, chopped
- 1 medium carrot, chopped
- 1 celery rib, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

Come for the potluck at 5:00 or the program at 6:15, or both. For the program, we’ll bring and talk about our favorite cookbooks and the recipes in them and you’re welcome to bring one of the dishes from the cookbook to the potluck if you’d like. You can bring a cookbook to share ideas from, or just come to listen in. This is a great opportunity to get new ideas of things to cook and eat.
For the potluck, please bring a plant-based (no animal products, including honey) main dish, salad, or dessert; a card listing its ingredients; and plates and utensils for your use. If you come alone, figure the amount to serve 4-6; increase the amount 4 servings for each additional person in your party/family.
