Events in and around Blue Island

Happy 100th Birthday, American Legion Post 50 Blue Island!

The above image shows the Post 50 Legion Band in front of the Blue Island Post Office during what looks to be the 1930s. American Legion Bands were a fixture at community celebrations, including Blue Island's Centennial Celebration in September of 1935, where more than 46 units of Legion Bands and Bugle Corps registered to compete on American Legion Day.

While a "persistent downpour" rained out the planned festivities and parade, more than 20 Legion units still made the trip to Blue Island, and as recounted in Volp's "First 100 Years," they were entertained with refreshments courtesy of the Centennial Celebration committee at the Masonic Temple, and "as usual, the Legionnaires had a great time."

Click the image above or keep reading for more information on how you can have a great time celebrating with American Legion Post 50 this weekend in Blue Island!
