August County Fair Edition 2018

It's August and that means one thing for our office, county fair!

Many people think our Extension office is responsible for conducting the fair. The Fair Association is an independent governing entity, funded in part by Johnson County Government. Johnson County Extension's role is to oversee the 4-H youth division of the fair. While 4-H Youth Development is a national program, it is administered by the state's county Extension boards in partnership with K-State Research and Extension.

The Johnson County Fair is the culmination of the 4-H year. Members submit their projects for judging and awards. County fair teaches youth time management, responsibility, poise under pressure, and much more. Top winners can go on to compete at the Kansas State Fair held in Hutchinson.

In this issue of Knowledge for Life we highlight some of our program's role in helping to make the county fair a success.

A personal journey
Judging Plant Science Exhibits
When you first enter the 4-H Green Building you're drawn to all the exhibits. Then you start noticing all the colorful ribbons. Have you ever wondered what went into preparing a project and the judging of exhibits at a county fair? Dennis Patton gives us a heartfelt insight into both roles.
4-H Plant Science — More than Just Growing Plants
Cooking: A lesson in STEM Concepts… And So Much More
Cooking is a physical science that includes chemistry and physics. A recipe is really nothing more than a science experiment. But cooking is also an art. Presentation and appearance are important. Finally, there's the pleasure from enjoying the results. Our 4-H youth learn many things, including STEM (science, math, engineering and math) when they take our cooking classes. You can see the results of their efforts at the county fair.
Ami Lin
My First Month as a 4-H Agent
Ami has only been with us for one month but she has already accomplished so much. Find out what all Ami has learned in her first 30 days with Extension. And, when out at the fairgrounds, if you see her in the 4-H Green Building or the Livestock Arena, be sure to stop her and say "Hi."
