FAMILY MATTERS

The Havelock Centre

Havelock Pentecostal Church opened its doors in 1936 and served its community for 80 years, multiplying ministry, establishing other churches and making disciples, some of whom became credentialed leaders with the PAOC. In recent decades the demographic and economic dynamics in the town shifted significantly, leading to very challenging days for the assembly. As a pastor I’ve sat with church members whose life-cycles have come to an end - and we’ve honoured their lives and legacies - often with tears. At times the District Ministry also attends to the end of the life-cycle for a church. These are always sad times; such was the case in the spring of 2016 when the members of the Havelock Pentecostal Church decided it was time to dissolve the work. They did so however with thanksgiving for the life and legacy of HPC over eight decades. They did so with faith and anticipation. They believed that Pentecostal ministry in Havelock could somehow continue.

A partnership developed with neighbouring Norwood Pentecostal Church, the ownership of the building was transferred to Norwood, and a trust fund created from the sale of the Havelock parsonage provided funding for Pastor Jeff Hackett and the NPC Family to partner with us to see something new, different and wonderful established. The Havelock Centre opened February 24th and is providing an after school club, Alpha, a neighbourhood food bank, and other creative ministry expressions.

Parliament to Vote on Canada Summer Jobs: Write Your MP
Please take the time to read the following excerpt from the Council of Christian Charities. The vote will take place on March 19th.

(Note: The motion in Parliament is an Opposition motion against the attestation issue therefore voting in favour of the motion is preferred.)
We are writing you now to encourage you to contact your local Member of Parliament about this development. Below is a sample of what you may wish to include.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to request that on March 19, you vote in favour of the motion on the Canada Summer Jobs attestation requirement.
The result of this vote will directly impact our charity, many other charities here in our city and beyond, and those helped by such services—from refugees settling in Canada, to children who might not otherwise be able to go to camp, to people who are homeless or affected by poverty. We cannot agree with the requirement of the government to force us to make the attestation. Agreement with the attestation will result in the removal of many such services. Compelled speech violates the long-held democratic rights that have existed before the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, have been reiterated in the Charter, and are recognized in the Canadian Human Rights Act. We urge you to vote in favour of the motion to keep Canada a nation where diversity of belief and democracy are allowed.

Sincerely,
(Your Name and Ministry Name)
