The mission of KLRN is to open a world of lifelong learning through trustworthy and enriching programs on-air, online and in our community.
Dear Families,

At KLRN, our mission is to open a world of lifelong learning through trustworthy and enriching programs on-air, online and in our community.

During these times, children are being forced to cope with major changes to everyday life, such as physical distancing and home confinement and trying to understand the new normal for now. That is why KLRN is here to support you with the many resources available through PBS.

As always, we are proud to be a resource for educators, parents, and caregivers especially during these times when schools are closed and children are home for extended periods of time. Working together, we can navigate these challenging times through keeping young minds in our communities engaged.

We continue to obtain resources from PBS Learning Media to help the learning at home. You can find many here, and we encourage you to set up a free PBS Learning Media login to create folders, share ideas online. Need help navigating this awesome resource? Please see the bottom of this page labeled PBS Learning Media Resources.

Be sure to visit klrn.org/learning and connect with us at  education@klrn.org  with anything you would like to learn more about.

With Appreciation,
The KLRN Education Team

INFANT/TODDLER COGNITIVE - THINKING
Cognitive skills encompass your baby's ability to think, learn, understand, problem-solve, reason, and remember. From birth, your baby absorbs information and starts building cognitive skills — even if it's not obvious at first. In fact, the care and experiences you provide can affect the development of your baby’s brain.

Name of the game: Variety. Expose your baby to a variety of toys and textures, such as a soft stuffed animal, bumpy plastic rattle, or smooth wooden block. Because most objects end up in a young baby's mouth, always provide close supervision and be sure items are not too small.

INFANT/TODDLER SOCIAL - PHYSICAL
Physical activities promote healthy growth and development. It helps build a healthier body composition, stronger bones and muscles. It also improves the child's cardiovascular fitness. Physical activities help in the development of better motor skills and in concentration and thinking skills

Activity: Play Simon Says. Encourage kids to move by playing “Simon Says.” Make your game very active by telling them “Simon says touch your toys” or “Simon says hop one your right foot five times.” Take turns being Simon and calling out the directions. This game not only gets them moving and improves  mobility , it also helps kids practice taking turns, listening, and following rules and directions.

INFANT/TODDLER COGNITIVE - ART
The freedom to manipulate different materials in a spontaneous and unstructured way allows for exploration and experimentation. These artistic attempts and self-directed explorations are not only fun, but educational as well. Art allows children to practice a wide range of skills that are useful not only for life, but also for learning.

INFANT/TODDLER - EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY
Your child's health includes physical, mental and social well-being. This development influences a child's self-confidence, empathy, the ability to develop meaningful and lasting friendships and partnerships, and a sense of importance and value to those around him/her.

PRESCHOOL COGNITIVE - THINKING
Children learn and grow through  every  experience. When you talk with them, ask them questions, and offer comfort, you’re nurturing a relationship that will help children feel safe and secure to explore and learn about everything around them. By using everyday moments for learning, you’re building their brains!

PRESCHOOL COGNITIVE - PHYSICAL
Children love to move—anywhere, anytime! Physical activity is great for growing bodies and minds. Being active together helps channel kids’ energy and keeps them healthy and strong. Plus, movement can help us—kids and grown-ups—calm down and relieve stress.

PRESCHOOL COGNITIVE - ART
Art helps young children to develop both gross and fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are essential for a child's school readiness and include providing practice with hand-eye coordination; bilateral hand use and using small hands and fingers to grasp markers, crayons, and brushes and create scribbles and marks

PRESCHOOL COGNITIVE - EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY
Social and emotional development gives children a better understanding of their feelings, and their peers' feelings (they are able to express them in a healthy manner) all while creating conflict resolutions with guidance from their parents.

PBS LEARNING MEDIA
PBS LearningMedia is free and can be used by anyone, but it was designed with teachers in mind. You can use it with the Remind app, Google classroom, and you can even create folders for your own reference and to share with your students, colleagues, and families.

SESAME STREET - CARING FOR EACH OTHER
Your friends on Sesame Street are here to support you during the COVID-19 health crisis. We know that these are very stressful times; daily lives have been disrupted, and families everywhere are trying to create a new sense of normalcy. Children thrive with structure in their lives and they learn best through play--even in everyday moments like mealtimes and morning and evening routines. So our site is filled with content you can use all day long to spark playful learning, offer children comfort, and focus a bit on yourself, too. After all, it's important that we take care of ourselves, so that we can best care for our families.
SESAME STREET IN COMMUNITIES
Every day, you make a difference by helping kids and families grow smarter, stronger, and kinder. Sesame Workshop has created Sesame Street in Communities to support you in this critical work. You’ll find hundreds of bilingual multimedia tools to engage kids and adults in everyday moments and daily routines—from teaching early math and literacy concepts, to encouraging families to eat nutritious foods, to serious topics such as divorce and food insecurity.
PROGRAMMING FEATURE: CYBERCHASE
There's a mega mystery in Megabays - the once-healthy kelp in Big Bay is washing ashore. The CyberSquad must work with Captain Skuttlebutt, keeper of the bays, to get to the bottom of it. They explore the marine ecosystem and discover that there are way more urchins than anything else... but why? Is it nature at work, or is something - or someone - causing the underwater kelp forest's collapse?

Tune in Thursday at 3:30PM, and follow-up the episode with the activities below!

PROGRAMMING FEATURE: SESAME STREET PLAY DATE
The “virtual play date” special follows Elmo and his Sesame Street pals as they find new ways to learn together online and discover fun things to do at home with their families — plus, they’ll celebrate today’s heroes like EMTs and doctors. The special is taped to look like a video conference — a familiar sight to most kids and their parents these days amid the coronavirus pandemic.
