ACADEMIC NEWS

We have officially begun second semester! Our mid-year Parent-Teacher-Student conferences will be  Thursday, February 6th from 4-7 pm  and  Friday, February 7th from 9 am- 6 pm . We can’t wait to see you to discuss your student’s progress. As we have done the last few years, you can pick up your student’s packet on the first floor and see teachers on the second and third floors. You do not need to make any appointments ahead of time. Spanish-language interpreters will be available throughout the two days. For the first time with semester exams, we reduced the total number of exam days to two days instead of three days. This is to maximize the number of instructional days rather than test days. If you or students have any feedback on this change, I welcome your thoughts.

The two highlights of semester exam week were our Freshmen Fine Arts Festival and our African Heritage Event, which was led by our Black Student Union! It was awesome to see our freshmen displaying their artistic talents! The event included speeches, spoken word poetry, a gallery walk of art pieces, and a choir performance. The African Heritage Event celebration included spoken word, choir performances, a STEP performance, fashion show, and break-out sessions discussing colorism, Afro-Latinos, and being a Minority within a Minority. What an awesome expression of students’ pride, talents, and perspectives! The following week, we held our annual Martin Luther King Day prayer service with a special music guest, Tonia Hughes, and Rev. Kelly Chatman. We celebrate Black History month this February across our classes and with a special assembly led by our Black Student Union. We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate our students, their stories, and all the ways they enliven our beautiful community.

We continue to design our Innovation Lab, which is set to open this fall. The lab will include spaces for Computer Science, coding, software-enabled design, audio-visual equipment, 3-D printers, and more. We are still planning how our classes will integrate these tools into their curriculum. This is an exciting challenge to support students’ college and career readiness.

Thank you for your partnership! Enjoy the winter and stay safe!

Febrero 2020
