The mission of KLRN is to open a world of lifelong learning through trustworthy and enriching programs on-air, online and in our community.
Dear Parents,

As the school year comes to an end, we know that many children will not be able to participate in many of the traditional summer time activities that our children look forward to year after year. We want you to know that KLRN is here for you and your family. Our Education Team is working hard to create some engaging virtual summer sessions for students of all ages. For families, we will continue to provide this weekly parent newsletter along with weekly blog posts with engaging and fun activities for children of all ages. Starting next week, our newsletter format will change so that we can include activities for students of all ages.

Parents, you have done an amazing job during this difficult time. In this Sesame Street clip , Louie, Elmo’s dad, shares some wonderful words of encouragement. As we try to do our best for our children, we also need to remember to take some time to breathe and take a moment to ourselves. We hope that our summer virtual sessions will not only be engaging for your children, but also give you a little time to take that much needed deep breath during the day. Later this week we will share the details of the virtual summer sessions for students please visit our events page or reach out to us at  education@klrn.org   to learn more.

With appreciation,
KLRN Education Team
INFANT/TODDLER COGNITIVE - THINKING
Art can help children learn and practice skills like patterning and cause and effect (i.e., “If I push very hard with a crayon the color is darker.”). They can also practice critical thinking skills by making a mental plan or picture of what they intend to create and following through on their plan.

Activity: Outdoor Exploration
Sending children outside to carefully examine a tree, feel its bark, and study the shape and color of its leaves, and then asking them to draw or paint trees helps them develop observational skills needed for science.
INFANT/TODDLER SOCIAL - PHYSICAL
When parents offer art activities, they are supporting children’s large and small muscle development, as well as their eye-hand coordination. Using crayons, markers, and play dough helps children practice their fine motor control they will need for writing later on.

INFANT/TODDLER COGNITIVE - ART
Simple activities can be relaxing and comforting for both kids and grown-ups. Invite your child to color with you.

INFANT/TODDLER - EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY
Small activities can provide big opportunities to spend quality time together.

PRESCHOOL COGNITIVE - THINKING
These activities are a great opportunity to talk about the concepts of absorption and color mixing.

PRESCHOOL COGNITIVE - PHYSICAL
Have children go outside and move as they look for small tree branches for this fun activity. Moving helps build children muscles and motor skills.

PRESCHOOL COGNITIVE - ART
Creating art expands a child's ability to interact with the world around them, and provides a new set of skills for self-expression and communication.

PRESCHOOL COGNITIVE - EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY
Learn about capillary action with this simple and colorful rainbow celery experiment. This experiment allows you and your child to talk about the circulatory system and "capillary" action
