The mission of KLRN is to open a world of lifelong learning through trustworthy and enriching programs on-air, online and in our community.
Dear Families,

The first day of school is an exciting milestone in your child's life. Your child is embarking on a journey that will lead them on many roads of discovery and learning. As wonderful as this new experience may be, it can also be quite stressful for the young child. New situations and change can, at times, be unsettling for all of us. For many children, this may be their first learning experience virtually, and adjusting can be very stressful. It is common for even the most outgoing child to be anxious about starting the new school year.

We have provided a few suggestions for assisting your child during this time. Remember that teachers are available to provide support and assistance, striving to make your child's school days their happiest days.

  • Prepare your child for the new school experience by explaining what to expect. Answer all questions directly and honestly.

  • Convey a positive attitude! Young children are aware of your feelings. Your enthusiasm will assure your child that school can be a fun and exciting place.

  • Establish a routine. Setting a pattern provides structure to our days, and it can help your child feel comfortable with what they have to do each and every day.

Below, you will find quality information and trusted resources that are composed of research-based content from reliable providers, such as PBS KIDS, PBS Parents, Vroom, The Fred Rogers Company, and Sesame Workshop.

KLRN wishes your families a happy and successful new year!

With appreciation,

Sesame Street in Communities
Every day, you make a difference by helping kids and families grow smarter, stronger, and kinder. Sesame Workshop has created Sesame Street in Communities to support you in this critical work. You’ll find hundreds of bilingual multimedia tools to engage kids and adults in everyday moments and daily routines—from teaching early math and literacy concepts, to encouraging families to eat nutritious foods, to serious topics such as divorce and food insecurity.

Today, we suggest checking out Stormy Days; this resource will help you communicate with your children when they need help coping with big feelings.
Play and Learn
Join KLRN in our upcoming Play and Learn session starting up September 19! Play & Learn offers families with children ages 0-5 years old an opportunity to connect in a virtual family-friendly, educational environment. Families meet virtually once a week to participate in parallel play experiences and explore PBS programs, apps, and resources.

Each series is 8 weeks. At each virtual session, we offer child-directed learning opportunities and activities, including music, dance and story time.

To learn more, email KLRN at [email protected] or contact the Education Department at (210) 208-8454.
Healthy Kids
KLRN’s Healthy Kids Project supports healthy lifestyles by influencing eating decisions and physical activities. Through project resources, the audience is introduced to songs, live action movement, animation, and a cast of “perfectly imperfect” characters to deliver key messaging that contrasts healthy choices and attitudes with unhealthy behaviors. Lessons include activities for children ages 0-9 and all school age lessons are aligned to the TEKS.

Check out Healthy Choices A to Z for a fun list of healthful activities you and your child can do!
