Dear Parents and Families,

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is accepting public comments on its proposed plan to restart the federally required accountability system for the 2022-23 school year (based upon 2021-22 school year results). The proposed accountability plan addresses disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and modifies accountability indicators and processes to best support New York’s schools. The full text of the draft accountability plan addendum and an online public comment form are posted on NYSED’s school and district accountability webpage. Comments will be accepted through August 5th.

Accountability is a two-way street; for the process to be effective, there must be a system that focuses on continuous improvement through a sustainable partnership between NYSED and schools/districts. New York’s proposed plan to restart the accountability system accounts for the realities of the past three school years, and how the pandemic affected the State’s ability to collect data on student learning. The accountability restart plan is required by federal law, and we will use it as a basis to continue to provide supports and resources to those schools and districts that most need them.

In addition, NYSED is streamlining its data-sharing practices to provide state assessment data to schools, teachers, parents, and the public more quickly. NYSED will provide the Grades 3-8 English Language Arts and Mathematics preliminary assessment data to districts and schools in August, prior to the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, so it can be used to help inform instructional decisions and develop individualized learning plans for students. This will also allow parents to receive their student’s information much earlier than in past years. The Department will publicly release all final state assessment data – including Regents exams – at the same time this fall. This will allow the Department to provide earlier public access to final annual assessment data for all state assessments.

Thank you for all you do to support your schools and communities. Please continue to follow our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn) for all of the latest summer updates.

Sincerely,

Betty A. Rosa
