Disturbing Trend | "Zyn" Pouches
As we work together to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, we want to bring to your attention a concerning trend that has been increasingly reported among high school students: the use of nicotine pouches, such as Zyn.
Zyn pouches are small, discreet, and marketed as a "safer" alternative to smoking. They contain nicotine, which is addictive, and when placed under the lip, the nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream. Although Zyn pouches don’t require smoking, they can still pose serious health risks, especially for young people.
Here are some important facts to consider:
Addiction: Nicotine is highly addictive, and using these pouches at a young age can lead to a lifetime struggle with dependence. Even short-term use can alter brain development, potentially leading to long-term cognitive and behavioral issues.
Health Risks: Besides the risk of addiction, nicotine use can negatively affect cardiovascular health, disrupt sleep patterns, and contribute to anxiety or mood disorders. It can also impair the development of the adolescent brain, affecting attention, memory, and learning.
Easier Access: Because Zyn pouches are small, discreet, and available in various flavors, they may seem less harmful or more appealing to teens than traditional smoking products. However, this ease of access is part of the concern, as it can encourage experimentation and use.
Lack of Awareness: Many students may not fully understand the potential dangers of nicotine pouches. It's important for us as parents, teachers, and caregivers to engage in conversations with our teens about the real risks associated with these products.
We encourage you to talk to your children about the dangers of using nicotine products and to remain vigilant in recognizing the signs of use. By working together, we can help protect our students from the risks of nicotine addiction and promote healthier choices.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community safe.

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Each November, the BSHS community comes together in a special way to organize a Thanksgiving Food Drive to provide for those in need in our local communities.
This initiative allows us to live out our school’s guiding principle in a special way. As we give thanks to God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us as People of God, we can be mindful of the ways in which we can serve those in need by being People for Others. Together, let us collaborate so that those who may be struggling will have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner this year.
The Thanksgiving Food Drive began on Monday, November 5, earlier this week. We are asking for your assistance in providing the following essential items so that local families in need are able to enjoy a delicious, traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Each theology class has been assigned a non-perishable food item to collect throughout the next two weeks:
- Mashed Potatoes - Mrs. Kilpatrick
- Stuffing - Mr. Aquilante (Juniors)
- Mac & Cheese - Deacon Mark (Juniors)
- Canned Yams - Sister Brenda
- Green Beans - Ms. Kolenda
- Corn - Mr. Thompson
- Canned Turkey Gravy - Mr. Aquilante (Freshmen) & Deacon Mark (Seniors)
- Cranberry Sauce - Father Monica & Sister Marianne

After School Academic Success Program
Some students struggle in school because organization and time management is a challenge for them; the result can be a failure to submit assignments on time. The Office for Academic Affairs, in conjunction with the National Honor Society, wishes to provide these students with additional support so that we can work together to avoid failing grades. To that end, we have developed the After School Academic Success Program (ASASP). The program is designed to help students who are struggling in a course because of missed or late assignments. How does it work?
STEP 1: A teacher submits a referral (using a Google Form) to the Office for Academic Affairs for a student who is currently struggling in his or her class and has missing or late assignments. With the referral, the teacher designates a specific assignment to be completed.
STEP 2: The Office for Academic Affairs contacts the student and his or her parent/guardian with a date for the student to report to the IHM Center for After School Academic Support. Students will be given at least two days notice for an After School Academic Success appointment. If there is a conflict, the Office for Academic Affairs will work with the student to identify an appropriate day.
STEP 3: The student reports to the IHM Center at 2:50 PM on his or her assigned date for After School Academic Success. The student will complete assignment(s). Members of the National Honor Society will be present to assist students in completing the assignment(s) designated by the referring teacher.
STEP 4: The student submits his or her completed assignment on Schoology, learns the value of hardwork, and enjoys the fruits of academic success.
