Trust and Hope: Help Shape the Future of the Church of Philadelphia

Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez has proposed a bold vision for the future of the Catholic Church of Philadelphia in his pastoral letter, Trust and Hope (more information can be found at TrustandHope.org). The Catholic Church of Philadelphia is not defined by its structures, but by its greatest treasure – it’s people.

To plan its future, the Church of Philadelphia is working with the Steier Group, a national Catholic fundraising firm, to conduct a campaign planning study. Please accept the invitation to share your feedback on the Catholic Church of Philadelphia’s proposed plans. This is our moment to renew the Catholic Church of Philadelphia – to strengthen parishes, form missionary disciples, and bring Christ to a world in need. Your voice matters!

Introducing the Civic Leadership Institute!

Rooted in Bishop Shanahan High School’s mission to form critical thinkers and moral stewards for a rapidly changing world, the Civic Leadership Institute provides students with a focused academic and co-curricular pathway in community service, public policy, and social impact.

The program empowers students to become ethical, compassionate leaders who advance the common good and uphold Catholic values and social justice in their communities and beyond.

For more information about this program, visit the Academic Pathways portion of the Shanahan website.

Parents of Sophomores - Have you considered one of Shanahan's specialized academic pathways for your child?

Applications for admittance to Shanahan's unique Academic Pathways Programs opened this past Friday.

In addition to a rigorous core curriculum, a wide array of electives, and AP and dual-enrollment opportunities, Bishop Shanahan High School offers specialized academic pathways that allow students to pursue their passions, develop real-world skills, and stand out in the college admissions process.

These programs include: the Eagle Business Academy, the STEM Certificate Program, and our newest initiative -- the Civil Leadership Institute.

More information about these programs, and the course selection process, can be found on the Shanahan website under Academics.

SAT Books for Sophomores

All sophomores received a copy of an SAT Prep Book in homeroom on Friday, February 6. Students are encouraged to use this book as a resource while preparing for both the PSAT and SAT. Math and ELA teachers may ask students to bring the book to class on specific days, so it should be kept in a safe and accessible place.

Each book has the student’s name on it. A replacement fee will be charged if a book is lost. Parents and guardians are encouraged to review the book with their child and support them in using it as a study tool throughout the year.

Appalachia Service Project

Shanahan students are invited to join parishioners from Saints Simon and Jude Parish to participate in a community service trip with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP). The trip will take place this summer from June 13th through June 20th. The ASP's mission involves:

  • Making homes warmer, safer, and drier for families in West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky
  • Establishing meaningful relationships with homeowners, volunteers, and staff
  • Empowering youth and young adult volunteers to take on high-impact home repairs
  • Emphasizing service for youth and adults of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.

The next meeting for Appalachia Service Project will be held on Feb 22 at 1:00 pm at Sts Simon and Jude Church, in The Meehan Center, on the lower level of the church.

If you are interested, please contact Ms. Joan Hayes at jhayes@shanahan.org.

Energy Drinks

We are noticing more neon cans in the morning and in the cafeteria at lunch. While energy drinks promise a quick fix for late-night study sessions, the "crash" is often harder than the "boost."

With high levels of caffeine and sugar, these drinks can lead to jitters, interrupted sleep, and midday slumps that make it harder to focus in class.

Keep your child's heart healthy and your focus sharp—your child's brain (and sleep schedule) will thank you!

Don't forget your ID

Per the BSHS Handbook, all students must have their school-issued ID badges visible and ready to go every morning.

Think of your ID as your "all-access pass." It is needed to enter the building and stay moving through the morning rush.

Forgot yours? Be sure to head straight to the office first thing so we can get you squared away!
