New York State Education Department logo - family newsletter

July 23, 2025

Dear Parents and Families,

At the July Board of Regents meeting, the Board and the State Education Department took an exciting step forward in shaping the future of education by officially adopting the updated Portrait of a Graduate. This new framework outlines the essential skills and qualities every student should develop by the time they graduate high school—such as creativity, critical thinking, communication, global awareness, and a strong academic foundation. It reflects our shared commitment to helping students grow into confident, capable, and compassionate individuals who are ready for college, careers, and life in an ever-changing world.

This update is part of the state’s broader Graduation Measures Initiative, which began in 2019 to ensure that every student’s diploma truly represents their readiness for success. Informed by feedback from families, educators, and community members, the Portrait of a Graduate will help guide future graduation requirements and support schools in creating more flexible, inclusive, and meaningful learning experiences. We are excited about what this means for your child’s education and future, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
