The ELC has just recently started to explore what it means to be an Anti-Bias Early Childhood Educator. As we explore this topic, I would like to frame the Anti-Bias approach to celebrations and holidays for all of you. We believe holiday activities support children’s cultural identity and enhance their and their family’s feelings of belonging to the school community. Anti-Bias holiday activities are a tool for broadening children’s awareness of our diverse world, adding to their enjoyment of its cultural diversity, and teaching them about people/activities who make important social contributions across a range of civic and religious traditions. In an attempt to not marginalize children who don’t share the same cultural experiences, we are collecting information from all families.
With that being said, we would like to get a better idea of how families would like the children to experience different celebrations and events throughout the year. There are already many times of the year that we engage in celebration, such as the ELC Anniversary, the Fall Festival, the Family Feast, Mud Day, etc. However, we would like to hear from all of you.
Please take a few moments to complete a quick questionnaire with the link below. This will provide us with information and guidelines around how to best meet the children, families, staff and center wishes for gathering in celebration with each other.

Active play time= opportunity to send in your child’s own helmet
Preschool is such a great place to learn through play and exploration. We are active learners, playing inside and outside. One of our adventures on the playground includes bikes and scooters. We use helmets on the preschool playground when riding bikes, scooters and wagons. We have helmets at school that are cleaned between uses. However, I wanted to invite you to provide a helmet specifically for your child if you would like to do so. Please send in a helmet with your child’s name on it, fitted specifically to your child. We will store these in classroom bins outside. The helmets will stay here and not go home. If you are unable to or would not like to provide a helmet, we will still provide our ELC playground helmets for the children. Helmets can only be worn outside when your child is riding a bike, scooter or wagon.
Ages and Stages Questionnaire
Each year after your child’s birthday
, the preschool teaching team will complete a screening assessment, called Ages and Stages Questionnaires, 3
rd
Addition; Developmental (ASQ:3) and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire; Social Emotional (ASQ:SE). The ASQs include questions about your child’s communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving and social skills. Families and teachers will fill out the form either on paper or online through a portal that we use through the Christina School District. The online tool requires your permission for the teaching team to complete. The District links the information to our program only and opens doors for families should early intervention be helpful for your child. More information about this tool will be coming home to you as your child celebrates a birthday. Please send back the permission form when you receive it. If you have any questions or are interested in completing the form now (if your child had a recent birthday or the teacher has requested it), please follow the links below.

The Newest Members of ELC Team!
What has 8 feet, 4 ears, 28 toes, and loves to be loved? The two newest members of the ELC team…our new guinea pigs! Our two new baby boys have moved into the hallway of the infant/toddler wing and are a HUGE hit with children of all ages. The entire center is currently participating in a naming game- each boy received over 30 name suggestions. Each classroom is casting a vote- as well as every teacher. Stay tuned…the names will be revealed shortly!
Fun Facts about Guinea Pigs
Some of the fun facts about guinea pigs:
- These animals are crepuscular, which means they tend to be most active around dawn and dusk.
- When excited guinea pigs may repeatedly perform little hops in the air, also known as “popcorning”.
- Guinea pigs communicate through a series of squeaks, chirps and purrs.
- A female guinea pig is called a “sow” and a male is called a “boar”.
DID YOU KNOW…?
- Guinea Pigs can live up to 10 years!
- At birth, a guinea pig can walk immediately
- There are 3 basic types of domestic guinea pigs, which can be identified by their hair type.
- American/English: Short, smooth coat or hair.
- Abyssinian: wiry coat with hair that swirls in rosettes.
- Peruvian: straight hair that is long & silky.
- Guinea Pigs are born with teeth that are constantly growing throughout their lifetime
- The guinea pig can open its eyes while in its mother’s womb 14 days before birth
- Although they are called “Guinea Pigs”, they are not closely related to pigs, but named for their short, robust body & piggish appearance. “Guinea” refers to Guyana, a country within their natural range.
- Guinea pigs don’t need to sleep for long periods? Instead they prefer to take short naps throughout the day and night
- Guinea pigs don’t have the same number of toes on their fore feet compared to their hind feet. They actually have 4 on their forefeet and 3 on their hind feet.
- They are very social animals and love the company of others, even humans.
- They need a supplement of vitamin c as they do not produce it themselves.
