Dear Jefferson Middle School Families,
We are almost upon winter break and when we return we will be in a new year and what a year 2020 has been! We want to take the time to share how important our Jefferson Family is to all of us. Staff at Jefferson are all longing for the time when we can get back in the building, but until then, we are here for all of you and believe that we can get through this stronger together! At Jefferson, we put together a transition planning committee and we will continue to update our community as we learn more about opening up the schools again. If you have not visited the district's reopening plan you can visit it here re-entry information.
Just a reminder that Winter Break runs from Monday, December 21-Friday, January 1. We will resume virtual learning on Monday, January 4, 2021. The first semester of our school year ends January 22nd.

Estimadas familias de la escuela intermedia Jefferson,
Estamos casi en las vacaciones de invierno y cuando regresemos estaremos en un nuevo año y ¡qué año 2020 ha sido! Queremos tomarnos el tiempo para compartir lo importante que es nuestra Familia Jefferson para todos nosotros. El personal de Jefferson anhela el momento en que podamos regresar al edificio, pero hasta entonces, estamos aquí para todos ustedes y creemos que podemos superar esto juntos con más fortaleza. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 8TH GRADE FAMILIES
HIGH SCHOOL COURSE SELECTION
Hello, 8th-grade families!
When we return from Winter Break, Jefferson 8th graders will engage in making decisions about what they will do when they go to Memorial next year. They have started by talking about different programs that are offered at the high school level that they can be a part of (AVID, ITA, Personalized Pathways, & PEOPLE)!
After Break, they will discuss things that are different in high school versus middle school. Students will explore the Memorial course catalog (English, Spanish) to identify courses that they might like to try in high school. The end goal is to have each of our students create a High School Action Plan.
Within the High School Action Plan, the students will consider their future goals, electives that they would like to consider taking, and other activities, clubs, or sports that they would like to participate in and how all of these things will connect in the coming years. On January 26th, in their homeroom classes, the students will choose their courses for ninth grade using the online platform Xello.

¡Hola, familias de octavo grado!

STUDENT YEARBOOK - WE NEED YOUR HELP!!
We are working on our 2020-2021 student yearbook and we need your help. Due to COVID we were not able to have our traditional student picture day with photos taken by LifeTouch
Here’s where you can help! You can take a photo of your student with your phone, camera, or tablet for the yearbook. Due to the poor resolution do not use the Chromebook.
Hold your device steady and in the upright position vertically- up and down (like when you are making a phone call). See the image above. Take a photo of your student’s head and shoulders only. (Portrait style) The photo must be jpeg or jpg, this is the format most cameras use. Save the picture at the highest resolution or largest file size. For an iPhone, the camera needs to be set at “Most Compatible” format under settings.
Submit the photo to the google Yearbook Classroom. (Yearbook Classroom code - mbzgzou) Name the photo with your student’s first and last name as it appears in Infinite Campus. Confirm the spelling as this is how it will appear in the yearbook.
The photos are due to the Google Yearbook Classroom by January 21, 2021.
If you do not submit a photo, we will use your student’s school photo from the prior year. (6th grade pictures will be images from last year’s IC but with poor resolution.) * If you are a new student to the district, your name will appear in the yearbook without a photo.Thank you. DLI Lottery Dates
December 11th, 2020: Lottery opens for current MMSD students
March 1st, 2021: Lottery opens for students new to MMSD
April 30th, 2021: Lottery closes at 4:00 pm
Middle and High School DLI Transition
Current students will be transitioned from 5th to 6th and 8th to 9th grade DLI automatically, no need to fill out an application
New students will fill out a lottery application to enter the program at these levels

Wednesday Attendance Update During Virtual Learning
We have shifted away from taking attendance for every class on Wednesdays and instead we will take attendance only for advisory class each Wednesday. Each Wednesday at 8:00 am there will be a google form in students Advisory google classroom. Students will submit this form anytime between 8:00 am-11:59 pm to be marked present. The advisory teacher will review the form Wednesday afternoon and mark absent any student who didn't yet respond. Phone calls will go out Wednesday evening to any absent students, reminding them they can still submit the form before midnight. Attendance will be updated for any correction needs each Thursday.
