Black History Month
February recognizes and celebrates Black History Month. The theme for 2021, chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity.” Students and faculty at the Clyde Hill Campus will engage in learning about the meaningful contributions of black people in the United States and beyond.
7th & 8th Grade IOWA Testing Mar. 3
Last year, our attempt to administer the IOWA tests to our 7/8th grade students was thwarted by a little hiccup called “Shelter in Place.” This year, we are proud to say that we have fought the valiant battle against COVID to be able to give the IOWA testing this year.

In the past, we’ve taken two entire days to complete the full battery of tests, which test for basic skills (versus academic knowledge). They aren’t graded and are used by teachers and the Student Academic Services (SAS) Department to better understand a given student’s skill-set. They are one of the tools we use for this purpose, versus being the only one, or even the biggest one. The two-day format was, in a couple of words, quite disruptive to the junior high teaching schedule, creating a loss of two academic days, plus the need to supervise 7/8th grade students for long stretches of time in the afternoons.

So, this year, a new plan.

On Mar. 3, we are condensing our Iowa test program into one day. The testing blocks will amount to roughly a normal Monday in terms of time, and coupled with breaks and lunch, won’t be much different than what they’d experience normally. Students have designated time blocks for a given test, and since most finish early, they won't be doing one test followed by one right after.

This way, we get back an entire teaching day and we avoid running afternoon 90-minute club times for kids two days in a row. Students with 504 plan-mandated extra time allotments will be well taken care of along those lines, with the same accommodations we provide every year for those kids. (Their testing will continue into Thursday morning and finishing up before lunch).

So, in short, same testing data, more class time gained, and less supervisory challenges. We’ll try this next month, see how it goes, and adjust as needed, if needed. Contact kimbra.baker@bellevuechristian.org with questions.
Importance of Attendance
From Asst. Principal Mike Olson:

"Attendance at school is much more than a logistical footnote in the official school log. It's a matter of not only receiving a high-caliber education but also contributing to the learning experience, which is done in community. Education is not merely a process of information transfer. It is a formational experience that allows all involved to participate, contribute, and benefit. Sometimes it's a formal lesson, other times a side conversation with a teacher. There are also accountability and relational dynamics that can only take place in-person. When these elements are combined, the student is part of a holistic and relational school experience that just can't be replicated in another format."

If your child will be absent for more than one day for a reason other than illness, please work with your child to complete the Planned Absence Form on our Clyde Hill Parent Portal.

If your child will be absent because they are sick, if they will arrive late to school or need to be dismissed early, please call our 24-hr attendance line (425) 460-3321. If end of school day plans change and you need to get a message to a student or need to dismiss them early, please call before 1pm to give our office staff time to relay the message.

Please note: If students are learning from home, parents do not need to call the office or attendance line. As long as students are in class, P (present in-person) or PO (present online) then parents do not need to notify the office. If a student is going to be absent, then please leave that information on the attendance line (425) 460-3321.
