Introducing Glenbrook's Hope Squad
Our school's Hope Squad is a program that utilizes a trained team of students to promote kindness, friendship and support to their peers. Students are nominated by classmates and teachers to be a part of this team. The squad goes through lessons facilitated by trained staff advisors. Together, they coordinate and engage our school community in activities to apply and share what they learned. Some topics might include resilience, anti-bullying, conflict resolution and building relationships.
Here are some of our Hope Squad’s thoughts…
Kennedy states, “It makes me happy that my friends feel comfortable coming to talk to me about things I might be able to help them with.” Caden reflected, “It’s just so special to me that I was nominated for this club by my friends and classmates.” Kaylee added, “It makes me feel good that my friends look up to me.”
When asked to share a specific moment when our members felt they made a difference in someone’s day through their work, Cathen, Jadyn and Josie reflected on their time spent with our kindergarten students teaching them the importance of fair play, including everyone in activities and kindness, as well as putting up posters reminding people how valued they are.
Deja talked about how good it makes her feel to help her classmates through some "bigger things." Maddie loved her time spreading holiday cheer, handing out candy canes and giving lots of her famous smiles to others around the school.
Our members also shared messages on hope and kindness as we head into the holidays, stating that they are about having fun; respecting everyone; that it’s not the gift, but rather the thought behind it; being grateful for what you have; and as Josie put it – “The holidays are meant to enjoy the time with family members, especially those that you might not always see.”
We are so proud of our committee and the work they continue to do, making our school (and world) a better place for everyone.
