FMEC 2024 Annual Meeting Starts Today

For the 40^th year, family physicians, residents, medical students and their supporters from the northeast U.S. are gathering for an exciting Annual Meeting. The event kicks off today with preconferences. The FMEC is pleased to welcome 355 medical students, 308 residents, almost 440 faculty and other physicians, along with 28 exhibitors and 102 residency programs (a new record!) in the Residency Fair. 

We’ve got HEART! We’ve got GRIT! We are FAMILY MEDICINE!

Philadelphia! A leader in medical education since the 1700s, Philadelphia had the first medical school, school of anatomy, college of pharmacy, and college for women doctors. About 1 out of every 6 U.S. doctors has received training in Philadelphia. It’s the city of brotherly love, the cradle of America, with the LOVE sculpture, Independence Hall, and the Rocky steps. Choosing a theme for the FMEC 2024 Annual Meeting was a challenge – there were too many options! We’ve got HEART. We found our way into family medicine because we saw passion, commitment and opportunity. We bonded with the family medicine community during school, and we form strong attachments to the families we care for, and for the care teams that make up our work families. We love our communities.

We’ve got GRIT. Grit is the combination of passion and perseverance. As family physicians, we are not immune to burnout and psychological stress. But our grit helps us endure and contributes to our psychological well-being. And like the Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty, sometimes we can seem a little out there, but we know the importance of making things fun.

We are FAMILY MEDICINE!

Be Ready for the Election in November

The FMEC encourages everyone at the Annual Meeting and throughout the region to register to vote and to use their authority as healthcare providers to examine and promote health policy issues they care about. At the meeting, attendees will see QR codes to help them register to vote at Vote.gov, promote voter registration at Vot-ER, and get active with Ask Nurses and Doctors (AND). We will be highlighting sessions about advocacy throughout the conference.

Today is Preconference day! Over 200 people will join for our workshops on POCUS, Dermatology, Nexplanon, Reproductive Life Planning, and the ALSO program, plus a meeting of the FMEC’s IMPLICIT Network and our groundbreaking Healthcare Innovators Network program. Get Involved with the FMEC at Networking Meetings on Saturday!

On Saturday, in between viewing posters and visiting the exhibits, please join FMEC volunteers at one of these three networking meetings and get involved! These meetings are 1:30pm-2:30pm.

• Integrative Health Learning and Teaching Network. Project leader Elena Rosenbaum MD and staff Rebecca Bouck (rebecca.bouck@fmec.net) will discuss how you can participate in the FMEC’s new Whole Person Care Performance Improvement Learning Collaborative. If you will not be at the meeting, email Rebecca Bouck for more information.
• Faculty Development Committee. The FMEC’s new Faculty Development Committee is seeking members and your input on what we should do! Join Dr. Gretchen Shelesky and committee members, and whether you are at the meeting or not, complete this 3-question Faculty Development Survey to give your input.
• Residency Program Coordinator/Administrator Group. The FMEC wants to do more to support program coordinators and other GME staff. For the second year, we are convening this informal group to meet and learn from each other, convened Annette Sheets, C-TAGME, Graduate Medical Education Supervisor at UPMC Williamsport Family Medicine Residency
