Family Promise of Grayson County Newsletter February 2023

NTXGivingDay

Our mission is intersecting faith and community to empower

Grayson County families to end child homelessness.

Message from our Executive Director

Happy February!

Hallmark has nothing on you when it comes to expressing love! You do it so eloquently, so generously, in so many ways every day!

Last year you served 8 families, including 27 children, in our Rotation program! 267 families, including 617 children and 406 adults, benefitted from our Family HOPE homelessness prevention and diversion program. Another 280 individuals from 79 families were provided with support such as food, clothing, diapers, or emergency assistance. 1418 individuals were given referrals to other agencies and services, and YOU gave 2504 recorded hours of your time volunteering to make all of the above possible! (I know there were many more hours you donated without counting them!) These are not just statistics--these are people whose lives you have touched and helped.

This year has started off well: we had a great retreat lead by Board Chair Becky Frank and were able to develop some strategic plans to better serve families this year. We are partnering with United Way and have been able to share information about our programs with several groups. We have a family of four in our transitional home, and they will have a new baby next week!

Read on to find out other ways love already has been shown in our community in 2023! May you always know you are loved.

With a grateful heart,

Leigh

Royal Case employees treat Family Promise royally!

Employees of the Royal Case Company in Sherman showed their generosity by bringing a literal truckload of supplies to the Day Center! Their kindness already has blessed many families and will continue to do so for many months to come! We are very grateful to our neighbors for so thoughtfully helping the families we serve!

These are some of the diapers, food, cleaning supplies, and hygiene supplies generously given by the employees of Royal Case! THANK YOU!

National Junior Honor Society

Two Sherman Middle School students, Shiloh and Angie, recently chose Family Promise to be the recipient of their service project for the National Junior Honor Society. These two young leaders collected and delivered school supplies, food items, razors, deodorant, and other hygiene items for use by guests of Family Promise. We are so happy that our schools commit to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. These students are making our community a better place! Thank you!

Upcoming Financial Literacy Classes

Family Promise has partnered with local financial experts to offer monthly classes on financial literacy. This is crucial knowledge for families trying to avoid or overcome homelessness. In January, Cadence Bank hosted an informative class on home buying! Thank you to Cadence Bank and to Laurie Mealy at Habitat for Humanity for allowing us to meet with them for this event. You can see from the picture what a great group we had!

Due to the icy weather, our financial class for children, hosted by Independent Financial, had to be postponed until our February class. Independent Financial leads a class on the last Tuesday of every month. The February topic will be geared towards children ages five through 5th grade, and is entitled, "Learn to Earn". It is about career and money choices! This will be held on Tuesday, February 28, from 5:30-6:15 PM at the Family Promise Day Center (901 E. Houston Street in Sherman).

Many of these classes are lead by our very own Family Promise board member Larsha' Thomas! Watch here for topics, times, and potential date changes. If you have any questions, please call Leigh at 903-771-0322. Snacks and child care are provided.

THANK YOU to our Host and Support Congregations!

Did you know that our host congregations still prepare to host even when we do not have a family in the program? This is necessary to be ready for families on short notice. Flexibility and the willingness to be the hands and feet of Jesus are at the core of being great hosts!

Our February host congregations are Georgetown Baptist in Pottsboro, Fairview Baptist in Sherman, and Covenant Presbyterian in Sherman. Thank you so much to the members of these congregations for loving our guests so well!

Why is Tara so happy?!

Tara (one of our wonderful case managers) is excited because Ariana Taylor of QuikTrip Corporation generously answered our request for gas cards for guests of Family Promise! These cards will help the families we serve get to work, school, day care, job interviews, and medical appointments! Thank you so much to QuikTrip Corporation for supporting non-profits in our community!

Love is...

Patient and kind, does not envy or boast, is not proud or self-seeking, keeps no record of wrongs, is not easily angered, does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

I Corinthians 13:4-8
