Family Promise of Grayson County Newsletter April 2022
NTXGivingDay
Our mission is intersecting faith and community to empower
Grayson County families to end child homelessness.

Message from our Executive Director

Summertime is here, and you all have done such an amazing job of supporting our families with food, shelter, love, and prayers. We currently are serving two families in our rotation program, and a third family is interviewing us about the program this week.

Since January 1, 2022, we have served nearly 100 families (including over 220 children) in our homelessness prevention program by assisting with rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.!  Thanks so much to those whose gifts make it possible--You know who you are!!

I hope to see each of you on Saturday!

Wishing you a safe, happy, and healthy summer!  ðŸ˜Ž

THIS SATURDAY!!

Thank you to our congregations!

We are so grateful to our host churches that continue to support our guests by providing hospitality, food, and shelter. Our May host congregations included Trinity Baptist in Sherman, First United Methodist in ShermanGrace Lutheran in Denison, Fairview Baptist in Sherman, and Hagerman Baptist in Sherman. June host congregations include Covenant Presbyterian in Sherman, and special thanks to Grace United Methodist in Sherman for hosting TWO weeks at the end of the month.  These are just a few of the ways we achieve our mission of intersecting faith and community to empower Grayson County families to end child homelessness! Thank you!

Please note that we still are in need of a host site for June 12-19!  Food and volunteers are covered, but our guests need a place to stay that week.  Please call Leigh (903-271-1088) ASAP if your church is willing to provide the rooms!

Family Promise Volunteer Training

Volunteer training is scheduled for Sunday, June 26 from 10:45 AM- 1 PM at First United Methodist Church in Sherman. Snacks will be provided, so please let Abbey Echols (903-893-6514) or Leigh Walker (903-771-0322) know if you plan to attend. Anyone desiring to become a Family Promise volunteer may attend this session or may call Leigh to schedule another training session.  Tell your friends and invite them to join the fun!

Independent Financial and BancorpSouth host classes

Last month at the Family Promise Day Center, Independent Financial hosted "Decision Tree", a very engaging financial class geared for children. Bank representatives Larsha' and Berlynn offered hypothetical choices about spending money versus saving it. Many of the children had strong opinions about which they would do! Each participant received a piggy bank for future savings!

The following week, a financial literacy class for adults was hosted at the Day Center. BancorpSouth representatives Matt and Jared brought wonderful budgeting materials as well as snacks. We are so grateful for these partnerships!

On Tuesday, June 21BancorpSouth-Cadence will host a class on budgeting and avoiding harmful pitfalls that can impact credit negatively. We are hoping Matt and Jared will return, as they did a great job teaching! The class will be from 6:30-7:30 PM at the Family Promise Day Center (901 E. Houston Street in Sherman).

Other financial classes sponsored by BancorpSouth will be held Thursday, July 28 and Thursday, October 6. These will be collaborative efforts by Family Promise, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, and Callie Clinic. Mark your calendar and watch for additional information!

Classes are open to all who are interested. Snacks, child care and door prizes are provided. Please let us know if you can attend, so we can plan accordingly.

Note: Child care assistants are needed during the classes. If you are a trained Family Promise Volunteer and would like to help out on any of these dates, please let Leigh know (903-271-1088).

A prayer for our community:

God, our Prince of Peace, we ask for your presence in the streets and homes of our community.  We pray for local law enforcement, for their safety, wisdom, and compassion in all circumstances.  We pray your comfort for those who have experienced violence, and we ask Your protection for all our neighbors.  Help us to be good neighbors!

Amen.
