Family Promise of Grayson County Newsletter May 2023

NTXGivingDay

Our mission is intersecting faith and community to empower

Grayson County families to end child homelessness.

Message from our Executive Director

Happy May Day!

In case you didn't know, already this year we have helped 47 families avoid homelessness. These families include a pregnant mom on bedrest whose husband was in a serious accident, unexpectedly leaving them with no income. When a local business closed, another family suddenly lost their income and insurance right before their child's scheduled surgery. By paying a utility bill or helping with rent, we are able to get these families through the short term crisis. Some of these 47 families already have started paying back a portion of the amount we paid on their behalf. It is an honor to serve our community, and your kindness and generosity make that possible.

Keep up the great work!

Leigh

2023 Homelessness Prevention Grant

Would you like the chance to increase the impact of your generosity? By giving today, you can prevent three times as many children in our community from becoming homeless.

Family Promise of Grayson County was selected to be a recipient of the 2023 Family Promise National Clayton Prevention and Diversion Grant. Family Promise National feels our "efforts to prevent and end homelessness are inspiring"! While this is a huge honor, to receive this grant of $15,000 via Clayton, we must have a $5,000 community match by June 30.

Last week, Share: Taking it to the Streets, a local 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides meals and other support to homeless veterans, gave the first $1000 towards our community match! A big thanks to them and to their Director Camille Snider for this very generous gift!

You can prevent more families with children from becoming homeless by helping us secure the remaining $4000 needed to receive this grant. To donate now, click the purple button below, or mail a check to:

Annual GreenServe Event

As part of their annual GreenServe event, members of the "Thinking Green at Austin College" environmental awareness club spent the morning of Earth Day volunteering their time at our Tabitha house. This hardworking crew caulked windows, mowed grass, trimmed trees, pulled weeds, planted flowers (donated by our very own Board Chair Becky Frank), washed and vacuumed our guests' vehicle, and learned more about our mission.

We are grateful to Roshni Khosla, VP of AC's Thinking Green Campus Awareness Student Committee, for arranging for this great group to serve. Thank you SO much to Shilo, Jasmine, Yasmin, Sage, Melody, and Becky for the excellent job they did in beautifying our transitional home!

Volunteer Opportunities

Many of you graciously volunteer your time and talents on behalf of the guests we serve. There are many opportunities to get involved! Be one of the first to check out some of those opportunities here!

Thank you for all you are doing to end child homelessness in Grayson County!

THANK YOU to our Host and Support Congregations!

"Thankful" is an understatement to describe how we feel about our congregations that graciously welcome families, provide meals, hospitality, and a safe place to sleep, and help struggling families get back on their feet. You are sharing God's love in a tangible and meaningful way!

Our May host congregations are Trinity Baptist in Sherman, First United Methodist in Whitesboro, and Grace Lutheran in Denison. Thank you so much to the members of these congregations for loving our guests so graciously!

We do have an upcoming Open Host week June 18-25. If your church would be willing to host that week, please call Leigh at 903-271-1088.

A final thought...

This month let's pray for all the families in our community: families of one or many, those we serve, those we need to reach, and those to which we belong. Can you imagine the power in that?
