Being an Active Partner in Your Child’s Early Intervention: Understanding the

Family Coaching Model

-Early Intervention (EI) is most effective when families are actively involved—not just during scheduled sessions, but throughout daily life. If your child is receiving EI services, you may have noticed that providers focus less on "doing therapy to the child" and more on working directly with you. This approach is called the family coaching model, and it’s based on the idea that families are their child’s most important teachers.

-In the family coaching model, the provider partners with you during each session to support your confidence and skills. They’ll model strategies, guide you as you try them, and help you think through how to use those strategies in your everyday routines. For example, instead of simply having your child practice a speech activity during the session, the provider might help you find ways to encourage those same skills during snack time or playtime. This approach is about making learning part of your child’s natural environment—so progress continues between sessions, not just during them.

-Being an active partner in this process means joining in during sessions, asking questions, and trying out the strategies your provider shares. You don’t need to be perfect—just curious, engaged, and open to learning alongside your child. It also helps to share what you've noticed at home: any progress, challenges, or changes you’ve seen. These insights help your provider tailor each session to what matters most for your child and your family.

-Between visits, even a few minutes a day of practicing what you’ve learned—during diaper changes, mealtimes, or play—can make a big impact. And when something isn’t working or doesn’t fit with your routine, speak up. EI is a team effort, and your feedback helps shape the plan moving forward.

-By embracing your role in the family coaching model, you’re helping your child build skills in the places they learn best: at home, with you. You don’t have to do it alone—your EI team is there to guide and support you. TOGETHER, you're building the foundation for your child’s success.
