Overdose Awareness Day Event

I am thrilled to be stepping into the executive director (ED) position at Family Transition Place (FTP) as of August 1, 2024. I’ve been part of the FTP team since 2001 when I started as a clinical counsellor working from both our Orangeville and Bolton offices. Over the years, I’ve held various leadership roles within the agency and have especially appreciated the last 17 years, working alongside our inspirational leader and ED, Norah Kennedy.

I feel honoured to be the next ED to work with our dedicated board of directors, skilled leadership team, and compassionate staff. We will continue to deliver and evolve our services to ensure they are inclusive and meet the changing needs of anyone affected by gender-based violence (GBV) in the Dufferin and Caledon communities.

There is still much work to be done. Throughout the last year, GBV was declared an epidemic by various levels of government and municipalities across Ontario.

It has always required immense strength and courage to leave an unhealthy relationship. The barriers to safety have increased significantly due to the current housing crisis and unstable economic climate.

Through education and advocacy, we need to continue to chip away at the stigmas that exist and encourage courageous conversations—in both our community and the systems we work within. This may seem like a daunting task, but I believe it’s possible if we work together. My values of wanting to work collaboratively, with empathy and responsibility, and my deep desire to make a difference, align with our agency values and purpose: to provide safety, support and hope to people in our community who need it.

I look forward to this next chapter and am excited to support our community together with our staff, board, and community partners. Coupled together with the generous support of our donors, funders and community stakeholders, we can realize our vision: a community free of abuse where all individuals are treated with compassion, equity and respect, and live their lives in healthy relationships.

Warmly,

Lynette

Overdose Awareness Day Event

Every day, we see lives around us being changed and lost to overdose. Overdose does not discriminate. It could be you or someone you love. A friend, colleague or your neighbour. This year, in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the Dufferin-Caledon Drug Strategy Committee* needs your support. Get involved to prevent the tragedy of overdose.

On Thursday, August 29th, from 7–8:30 p.m., join us at Theatre Orangeville (87 Broadway) to learn about how overdoses are impacting our community and hear from a panel of people with lived experience and local advocates. Information and local resources will be available.

Entry is free. Tickets are available in advance (link below) or day of at the door. Each guest will receive a gift bag containing local resources and swag.

Community Support

What if an oil change could impact your community?

When your car is serviced at the Take 5 Oil Change Orangeville location, please mention Family Transition Place (FTP) and they will donate 10% of your bill to us in support of our programs and services.

This donation will NOT be an extra charge on your bill. Take 5 will generously donate 10% of your subtotal to FTP. And, after making this initial request, your vehicle will be automatically set up in their system to donate 10% of all future invoices to FTP.

We are beyond thankful to Take 5 Oil Change Orangeville for generously supporting us through this initiative. This is an incredible example of community supporting community.

Nurturing Connections

Amidst the challenges of the pandemic, our Youth Education Program educators organized an inspiring virtual art competition for Mother's Day with winners receiving prize bags full of delightful goodies and informative brochures about FTP's programs and services. The brochures ended up being the more valuable prize as one household—unfamiliar with FTP at the time—later found themselves in need of our services. That small contest provided them with the resources they needed to access support at a challenging time.

This story is just one example of the impact and ripple effect of our outreach efforts and community engagement. It serves as a reminder that every interaction, every initiative, no matter how small, can make a difference in someone's life.

We're fortunate to offer our Youth Education Program in schools throughout Dufferin and Caledon as it nurtures connections and fosters support in our community. This program relies heavily on fundraised dollars. If you would like to learn more about the work our youth educators are doing, please visit the Youth Education Program page on our website. Your support is appreciated.
