It’s August, which means it’s almost Back to School time or just “to school” time if your little one is starting their very first chapter. Whether they're picking out their first backpack with wide-eyed excitement or gearing up for middle school with more independence, this season can bring on big feelings for them and for you. Read on for some simple ways to start the school year strong and keep it going on a positive note all year long!

Tip 1: Prepare starting...now!

Preparation makes all the difference when it comes to back-to-school transitions. Ease into routines when you:

  • Talk about the big day early (3–14 days, age-dependent) to help them know what to expect, ease worries, and calm any jitters.
  • Let them choose a few supplies/outfits to build excitement and ownership.
  • Start the routine now. Shift bedtimes, wake-ups, and naps to school-day times.
  • Encourage independence: packing the backpack, getting dressed, bathroom habits.
  • Do 1–2 “practice mornings”: breakfast, pack up, quick sendoff, out the door.
  • If possible, take a walk or drive by the school before the first day. Point out where you’ll drop them off and where they’ll go in. Familiarity helps ease first-day nerves!

Tip 2: Kick Off the Big Day with Some Special Traditions

Start your mornings of with some special rituals.

1/ Whether it’s a secret handshake, a special goodbye phrase, a trinket tucked into your child's backpack, or a heart drawn on their hand, a consistent goodbye ritual reassures your child that you’ll see them again soon.

2/ Pick a fun, upbeat song you always play on special mornings (like Happy by Pharrell or Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves). Play it as you get ready so it becomes a tradition.

3/ Start the day with a quick affirmation or cheer together. Something as simple as “I am ready, I am strong, and I’m going to have a great day!” helps your child feel confident as they head out the door.

Tip 3: Show Daily Love All Year Round!

A quick Dad-Tested tip:

Write a daily sticky note for your child's lunch - even if it's just a quick note or a doodle of a dinosaur.
