President's Letter
|
Dear Council Leaders
, Supporters, and Friends:
Change is everywhere, and we have choices: we can embrace change, move with it, resist change, or ignore it. Only the latter option is foolhardy.
As we learned at last month's stimulating WACA National Conference: America and Global Megatrends, the U.S. election prompted some of our invited speakers to move with change and adjust their prepared remarks. Senator George Mitchell tried to relegate the subject of his new book on the Middle East to the Q&A session, to focus instead on the agenda and expectations of the Trump administration. Our audience moved, too: virtually all the questions were focused on domestic issues, such as civil liberties; immigration was a close as we came to international queries.
We are seeing new approaches in the nomination process for Cabinet positions, including auditions before the press at Jean Georges restaurant in Manhattan. We are seeing departures from decades of foreign policy, with the President-elect's telephone call with Taiwan's leader. And Mr. Trump's tweets criticizing Beijing's monetary policy and maneuvers in disputed Asian waters may herald new-wave diplomacy, that could upend both conduct and policy.
The job and relevance of WACA and World Affairs Councils are as important as ever. A hallmark of our nonpartisan forums is their civility, a quality the election campaign revealed to be increasingly and disturbingly lacking. We ought to hold the incoming administration to account for what Mr. Trump pledged in his acceptance speech: a sense of unity and inclusion; honor for our institutions, and respect for each other. Another of our Conference speakers, Carl Gershman, highlighted the challenges facing American democracy and democracies elsewhere. Whether we examine his argument from the Republican, Democrat, or Independent perspective, it is clear we must address these challenges together.
I am sober about our responsibilities as citizens and excited for what the Council network can do in the coming months and years. In the short-term, WACA will be grappling with an internal change: it is very bittersweet to say farewell this month to Althea Georgantas, who as you will see below, is about to take on a new professional challenge. She has been a superb colleague, and I could not be happier for her or more proud of her.
Lian Esehaki, Tori Baskind, and I wish our friend well as we move with this change, until a successor to Althea is found whom we can all embrace.
Wishing you a fulfilling holiday season,
Bill Clifford, President and CEO
