Myths in Bahram Beyzaie's Works

 Farhang Foundation and UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies will proudly present a lecture by Bahram Beyzaie, prolific playwright, film director, and researcher, taking place Sunday, December 2nd at 3pm at Dodd Hall 147, UCLA. Over the past five decades, Mr. Beyzaie has published more than 35 plays and written more than 50 screenplays. He has also made ten feature and four short films, among them Mustachioed Uncle, The Journey, Talking with the Wind, The Speaking Carpet, Downpour, The Stranger and the Fog, The Crow, The Ballad of Tara, Death of Yazdgerd, Bashu, The Little Stranger, Maybe Some Other Time, The Travelers, Killing Rabids, and While We Are All Asleep. A Night of Poetry with Houshang Ebtehaj

The Premiere of The Iranian Americans

The long anticipated premiere of The Iranian Americans takes place December 18th on PBS. Chronicling the history of Iranian American immigrants seeking refuge in the United States, this documentary begins with a historical look at Persia more than two millennia ago, and features the perspectives of 25 Iranian Americans recounting their experiences as immigrants. They include Maz Jobrani (actor/comedian), Jimmy Delshad (politician and former mayor of Beverly Hills), Firouz Naderi (director of solar system exploration at NASA's JPL), Goli Ameri (former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs and a former delegate to the United Nations), and Hamid Biglari (vice-chairman of Citicorp).

Tehran: An Urban History of Revolutions

 On Thursday, January 3rd, Farhang Foundation will co-present a lecture by Professor Talinn Grigor, the associate professor of Modern and Contemporary Architecture at Brandeis University. Professor Grigor, an architectural historian, will explore the relationship between architecture and politics in Iran, with a look at Tehran's urban space and its embodiment of social and economic stratification within Iran. Tehran: An Urban History of Revolutions takes place at the Hammer Museum at 10899 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90024. 5th Annual Farhang Foundation Short Film Festival
The Submissions period is now open!
 At Farhang Foundation, we are big believers in the idea that a picture is worth a thousand words. Telling a powerful story through the cinematic arts is a rare ability that we believe deserves to be rewarded. This is why since 2009, we have continued to call on individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life to submit short films visualizing some aspect of Iranian art, culture, and heritage for a chance to win $10,000 (first place), $5,000 (second place) or $3,000 (third place).
Farhang Foundation's annual online film festival, now in its fifth year, offers contestants the opportunity to compete for prize money and the prestige of screening their film before a live audience at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
The submissions period for this year's festival is now open until February 1, 2013. The award ceremony, during which the winning submissions will be screened before a live audience, will take place on March 16, 2013 as part of Farhang's annual Nowruz celebration at LACMA.

Farhang Connect: A Night of Persian Culture with a Contemporary Twist
 One of our greatest achievements in 2012 was launching the
Farhang Generations Council.
Dedicated to furthering Farhang Foundation's mission by engaging forthcoming generations of Iranian-Americans in Iranian art and culture, the Farhang Generations Council officially kicked off on November 17th with Farhang Connect: A Night of Persian Culture with a Contemporary Twist at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. The evening featured Ardeshir Radpour, acclaimed professional polo (chogun) player and historian; Payman Hamed, Persian calligrapher; Sam Anvari, graphic artist; Hamid Saeidi and Mehrdad Arabifard, masters of traditional Persian music; and musical performances by Cameron Rafati and DJ Kabo. The Farhang Connect program was well-attended by young Iranian-American professionals eager to become more involved with Farhang's mission. The diversity of Iranian culture and history comes to light in a new exhibit at UCLA's Fowler Museum currently on display
until March 13, 2013.
Light and Shadows: The Story of Iranian Jews offers a fascinating look at the history of the nearly 3,000 year-old Jewish community in Iran through archaeological artifacts, manuscripts, ceremonial garments, musical instruments, paintings, photographs, video, and more. The exhibition will also explore twentieth century Iran through Hasan Sarbakhshian's photographs of the remaining Jewish community in Iran and installations by artists Shelley Gazin and Jessica Shokrian about Iranian Jews in Los Angeles.
Light and Shadows: The Story of Iranian Jews has been created and organized by Beit Hatfutsot-The Museum of the Jewish People, Tel Aviv, Israel. Farhang Foundation is proud to team up with the Y & S Nazarian Family Foundation (lead sponsor), The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles (exhibition partner), and the Sinai Temple (co-sponsor). Shahnameh Festival 2012
A modern day celebration of a timeless masterpiece
 On October 6, 2012, Farhang Foundation, in partnership with the Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture at the University of California, Irvine, organized a full day of events dedicated to celebrating the national epic of Iran and one of the masterpieces of Persian literature, Ferdowsi's Shahnameh ("Book of Kings").
The 2012 Shahnameh Festival kicked off with a free conference at UC Irvine, featuring lectures by notable international scholars discussing various elements of the Shahnameh, including its historic, cultural and artistic implications. The festival continued in the evening with "Love Stories of the Shahnameh" at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.
Written by the incomparable Gordafarid (considered to be the first female naqqal), "Love Stories of the Shahnameh" depicted three tales from Ferdowsi's epic: "Shirin & Khosrow", "Bahram & Arezoo" and "Sohrab & Gordafarid." Under the choreography of dance virtuoso Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam, "Love Stories of the Shahnameh" featured the remarkable Miriam Peretz and Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam in a highly praised and moving performance.
Thank you to all who contributed their time, talents, and resources to the 2012 Shahnameh Festival. In particular, we are sincerely grateful to our friends in the community who joined us at the event, making it one of the most well-attended events at the Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture to-date.
