The 2020 Next Generation Summit is going virtual
Beginning farmers are urgently needed in Iowa! We are experiencing a monumental transfer in farmland ownership. According to a 2017 Farmland Ownership and Tenure Survey, 60 percent of Iowa farmland is owned by people over the age of 65, and 35 percent is owned by people over the age of 75. Over half of Iowa farmland is owned by someone who does not currently farm. Many farmers and landowners are considering their plans to transition their land, while aspiring and beginning farmers are seeking land.

Are you one of these people? Are you a farmland owner thinking about the next steps for your land and the legacy you would like to leave? On the other side, are you an aspiring farmer looking for land to begin your farming dream? Then we invite you to join Practical Farmers’ Next Generation Summit, August 4-7 . This virtual event will bring together aspiring farmers and farmland owners in a way that allows for education and networking help to overcome the challenge of farmland access. This year we will be offering the summit virtually in three parts.
Tuesday, Aug. 4 | 2 – 4 p.m.

Farmland owners will work on setting goals to work toward a farmland legacy that reflects their values. They will also learn about how to take the next steps to begin the transition period when the time is right.
Wednesday, Aug. 5 | 5 – 7 p.m.

Aspiring and beginning farmers will walk through the process of determining their farming purpose and planning the next steps to acquiring farm land.
A Meet-up for Landseekers and Landowners

Friday, Aug. 7 | 5 – 6 p.m.

This session will be filled with networking opportunities to meet aspiring farmers and landowners. Farming takes a community of many individuals. All are invited to come and learn about the issues facing transitioning farmers and land. Let’s connect all the generations that make farming possible and support those coming into the next generation.
We hope you will join us for all or some of this virtual Next Generation Summit.  Each workshop is free and all are welcome to attend, pre-registration is required.
Resources for Farm Transfer
In case you missed any of these virtual events we have recordings available below
Creating a farm succession plan takes time, moves slowly and involves many different people. Understanding your and sharing your goals is an important step in putting together a plan. During this event, Martha McFarland, Regina Frahm and Kim Anderson shared some of their farm succession goals. We heard what has worked from them so far and what has been a challenge.
Dale Nimrod and his siblings, Faith Sherman and Vance Nimrod, sold their southwest Iowa farmland to a local farm family at below market value in 2005. Currently, Dale and his wife Sunny are working with lawyer Karl Knudson to transfer their own farm in northeast Iowa to their heirs in a manner that is equitable, affordable and farmable.

Dale is also featured in our summer edition of the Practical Farmer, Making Land Affordable for the Next Generation
Professional farm management services can provide landowners with valuable tools and expertise for managing farmland. Hear from farm managers Mollie Aronowitz of Peoples Company, Brent Larson of Sundermans Farm Management and Morgan Troendle of Hertz Farm Management about how they work with landowners, tenants and conservation professionals to implement conservation on working lands. Bring your farm management questions — this event will include substantial time for Q&A.
Resources from 2020 Farm Retirement Workshops

Practical Farmers of Iowa and Syverson Strege hosted two “Understanding Farm Retirement” online workshops in early April. These workshops discussed retirement in the context of farm transition and succession.

Facilitated by financial planners from Syverson Strege, these workshops discuss retirement planning and implementation strategies and will laid out a roadmap to retirement as part of a larger farm transfer or estate plan. Attendees also heard about new legislation (the SECURE Act), effective December 2019, that includes changes to IRAs, 401(k)s, RMDs, and more.

Find A Farmer was created by Practical Farmers of Iowa to help maintain family farms and vibrant rural communities by facilitating the transfer of land from one generation to the next.
