The West Australian Olive Council has announced the tragic passing of long-standing Board Member, EVOO judge and respected industry colleague, Barry Sander, following a farm accident at his property, Tarralea Grove.
Barry will be remembered fondly as a kind and generous man who gave freely of his time and expertise to the olive industry for many years. He served as an olive oil judge at both state and national levels and was always willing to share his knowledge and help other producers.
Through Tarralea Grove, Barry produced award-winning olive oils and provided contract olive processing services to many other growers. His contribution to the Western Australian olive industry has been significant and lasting.
Barry was a much-loved husband to his wife, Anne, and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
The Australian Olive Association team is deeply saddened by Barry’s passing. He was dedicated member of the wider Australian olive industry, and pioneered the production of different varietals like Volos, Ascolano and Barouni – the latter described by Australian International Olive Awards Organiser Trudie Michels as “awesome, like a lemon Agrumato, and always won gold”. He was passionate about his craft, and good at it, with Tarralea’s EVOOs consistently winning medals and trophies in the AIOA and other competitions.
Barry was generous with his time and knowledge, keenly welcoming visitors to the family grove and introducing them to olive production. He and Anne also enthusiastically provided input to Olivegrower & Processor articles and shared their experiences with other growers.
