Hunger 101

Hunger 101  is an interactive, role-playing exercise where participants play the role of a head of household trying to get enough food for the family.   After figuring out the household budget for food, the participant can visit a grocery store, the social services office, and the food pantry in this quest for food.

GardenShare can bring this program to any group that has 15 or more people in attendance.  It takes about an hour.  It is best suited to high school students, college students, and adults, but can be adapted slightly to work for middle school students.

Would you like to learn more but can't get a group together? We're providing a one-of-a-kind opportunity for concerned community members to join Gardenshare's Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff for a special Hunger 101 session, followed by a presentation on the "Bridges Out of Poverty" program:

Wednesday, June 14, 2017
6:00 - 8:30 PM
at the Adirondack Lodge on the Clarkson University campus
Light refreshments will be provided.  No admission charge.

If you will be joining us, please RSVP to help with our planning.

Hunger 101 is likely to spark interesting discussions about solutions to the problem of hunger in our midst.  Here are just a few examples of comments from recent Hunger 101 presentations:
  • I really thought I was pretty good at budgeting and meal planning.  But I've realized that's because I'm able to shop around and buy in bulk for the best deals.  Not everyone has that opportunity or the means to cook the food they get.
  • I realized before the exercise that SNAP benefits were minimal, but during the exercise I experienced (almost) realistic frustration.
  • I was surprised by how the system fails many people who need help.

Help sponsor a family for a CSA Share

Fourteen families are on the waiting list for a subsidized CSA share this season and GardenShare needs to raise an additional $2,700 to serve all of them.  Can you help with a donation?
  • $250 helps a family of five have healthy food by paying for half of their CSA share
  • $100 supports a smaller household with half a CSA share
Donations of any amount are welcome and will help close the gap.   Go here to make a gift and every dollar of your donation will help sponsor a household.
