4R Nutrient Stewardship
"Was the crop given the right source of nutrients at the right rate, right time and right place?"
It all starts with choosing the right fertilizer
1) What source of nutrients would be the least expensive per unit of delivered nutrient?
  • By calculating the cost per unit of fertilizer aids in decision-making when choosing how much and what type to utilize.
2) Should an organic source (compost or manure) of nutrients be considered?
  • Manure does more than just provide essential nutrients. It can increase soil organic matter, cation exchange capacity (CEC), water holding capacity, and aggregate stability.
3) What sources can simultaneously deliver more than one needed nutrient?
  • Recognize blend compatibility or even synergisms among nutrient elements and sources.
4) When should the liquid form be used instead of a dry form application?
  • Consider ease of application throughout the growing season. If you can get nutrients during planting, that is one less pass across the field you need to make. Saving time, and resources while limiting the risk of rearranging soil aggregates with increased traffic.
5) When should the salt index of the fertilizer be considered in selecting the right source?
