Growing success in Boyacá: PWRDF supports farming project in Colombia

Boyacá is a mountainous region nestled in the Andes of central Colombia. Diocese of Qu’Appelle, PWRDF join Grow Hope SK

The Diocese of Qu’Appelle and PWRDF have joined Grow Hope Saskatchewan, a project of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank that raises funds to end hunger all over the world. PWRDF’s first experience with a Grow Hope project was Anglican Grow Hope in Manitoba. Through the project, parishioners connected with local farmers and became so much more aware of the challenges facing Canada’s agriculture industry. Grow Hope Saskatchewan provides yet another opportunity for relationship building across denominations.

Cuban partners support hurricane response and long-term program

On September 27, 2022, Hurricane Ian tore through the Caribbean making landfall in Cuba. In all, 63,000 homes were damaged, and 9,000 crops were destroyed. Natural disasters like hurricanes and drought are cyclical in Cuba and cause many families to lose their homes and farms and make it harder to produce food. In December, PWRDF provided $10,000 to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center (CMMLK), a partner working in Pinar del Rio Province, and an additional $10,000 in February, 2023.

“Our peaceful life came to an end.”

Valentine Yakosleva Pomaza, 84, has lived most of her life in Kharkiv, Ukraine. She was a teacher, and lived on her own, but her good friend Luba Pavljenka Petrovna, lived in the same building.“Kharkiv was a beautiful city with a rich history,” she said. “Three companies operated there, employing 13,000 people in factories producing material for the military, tools for lighthouses, 80% of the optical tools in the USSR. …There were lots of good schools in Kharkiv.” But Kharkiv’s beauty and prosperity changed with the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. Kharkiv is one of the Ukrainian cities that has suffered the most. “Now, the city is almost entirely destroyed."

Creation Care: Climate Action 2.2

Climate-change emergencies and women

In year two of our Creation Care: Climate Action education focus, we are exploring the intersections between Climate Change and Gender. Learning Module 2.2 is focussed on Climate change emergencies and Women. It includes a recorded South-North dialogue with Bishop Jane Alexander, now ministering in the Territory of the People, and Mary Obiero with Church World Service Africa, as they discuss how women are impacted by emergencies caused by climate change, be they fires, floods or droughts. How are women impacted differently than men? And how are they responding? The resource includes scripture readings and questions for Bible study, as well as suggested activities for a parish group.
