There are multiple core competency skills that help us and our employees succeed throughout our career no matter what our position: critical thinking; persuasive communication; organizational skills; listening and taking direction; working collaboratively as a team member; modeling good leadership which includes our diligence to meet goals; developing technical skills; and using creativity to be innovative/look for out-of-the-box solutions.
One place we must assess for core competencies is when we evaluate candidates. Ask behavioral questions requiring specific examples to gauge their competencies: Examples include:
· Please give an example of when you had to make a decision when you didn’t have all the information.
· Tell me about a time when you used a creative approach to solve a problem in order to meet a goal?
· How have you handled working with someone you felt was not good at communicating?
· Describe a time a supervisor gave you a task that you felt should’ve been given to one of your coworkers. How did you handle it?
· During COVID many of us had to learn new technology. Describe the steps you have taken when learning a new technology?
Consider where you are with these core competencies and ask yourself these questions to assess your growth!
