Greetings!

Fabrics that look good on both sides are not always easy to come by. WIth the right sewing pattern these treasurers do double duty in the creation of fabulous and unique garments.

Feature the Reverse Side

With Independent Designer Patterns

When using a fabric that has an interesting "wrong" side, look for sewing patterns that are reversible or state "wrong side of fabric shows". These patterns often make a feature of the wrong side. Also consider patterns that use contrast details in the lapel, cuffs, pockets, piping or inserts to take advantage of the dual nature of the fashion fabric.

Haiku Two Jacket
This pattern has been a favourite of mine for so many years. This is an example of a pattern where the "wrong side shows". The lapels are cut-on and folded back to display the reverse side of the fashion fabric. I have used hand-dyed linen blends and jacquards, and sewn it in both the short and long version. For the long version I also used the fringed selvedge as the edging on the lapel (rather than turning it under) and as the top edge of the pockets.

Portlandia Coat

The Portlandia is a hooded full length reversible coat. You can also shorten it to car coat length. On Side 1, the reverse side of the fabric shows when the hood is down or when the bottom of the front opening turns back when walking. On Side 2, the reverse side of the fabric becomes the feature and the "right side" becomes the contrast along the edges of the hood, front opening and the cuffs.

Cheri's Reversible Jacket

Not only is this jacket reversible, it can be worn many different ways depending on how you button it. One side of the fabric forms the contrast for the opposite side. And all edges are neatly finished.

Waterfall Tunic

This elegant tunic calls for contrasting or coordinating fabrics. A reversible fabric by its very nature usually makes the perfect coordinating fabric. Audition by fabric by positioning one layer over the other to decide which fabric you want to have the strongest feature and then you are ready to cut and sew.
