Dear Steve,
DID YOU KNOW that a study from Frontiers in Nutrition found that omega-3 fatty acids supplementation had positive effects on the regulation of fat tissue related genes in patients with myriad metabolic conditions?
As you may or may not know, adipose tissue, also known as fat tissue, is an organ system in and of itself. This means it can be affected by hormone, toxin, nervous system, and genetic dysfunction.
One way to calm dysfunction is to use omega-3 fatty acids, usually in the form of fish or fish oil. Excitingly, the researchers confirm that omega-3 fatty acids can quell negative expression of genes associated with the proliferation of fat tissue.

Bonnie Minsky Award Winner 2023-2024
We are very pleased to introduce the recipient of this year’s UIC School of Public Health Bonnie C. Minsky scholarship, Joanna Paul.
Joanna is a joint MPH and MSW student, enrolled in the School of Public Health’s Division of Community Health Sciences, with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health. During her time at UIC, Joanna has worked for the Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health, supporting staff and faculty on a variety of administrative and research projects. Joanna also co-led the Steering Group for the Maternal and Child Health Interest Group, helped plan the SPH Spring Symposium, served as an Advocacy Board Member for the Maternal and Child Health National Network, and interned for the Illinois Policy Team at Start Early.
When informed that she received this generous award, Joanna noted that the funds “will help to reduce my financial stress and allow me to dedicate more of my time and energy to my studies. Because I will graduate with minimal student loans, I will be able to pursue professional work that aligns with my values of supporting vulnerable communities instead of sacrificing the work I am passionate about in favor of a higher salary.”
After graduating next spring, Joanna, who is interested in early childhood policy, advocacy, and research, hopes to work for a non-profit organization in Chicago that will allow her to improve childcare access and prevent trauma among vulnerable children and families. Joanna plans to become licensed as a social worker and engage in clinical practice with similar populations to advance health equity and social justice.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online | On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. In September 2023, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. The FDA sent a warning letter to Amazon in later December 2023.

Steve: There have been fabulous reminders recently about how diet and lifestyle choices can help our hearts.
Eating an optimal balance of acid and alkaline foods helps reduce hypertension and overall mortality related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to two studies in Nutrients. One of the easiest ways to lower acid load and increase alkalinity is to eat fruit and vegetables.
People who were at increased risk for CVD who participated in produce prescription programs increased their consumption of fruits and vegetables, which was associated with improved body mass index, blood sugar and blood pressure levels, according to a study in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.
Higher habitual intakes of flavanols and anthocyanins from fruit and vegetables are associated with a lower risk of ischemic stroke from atherosclerosis, according to a study from The Journal of Nutrition.
Researchers in JAMA Network Open purport that participants in a mindfulness-based blood pressure reduction program improved health behaviors that lower blood pressure. When people who had elevated blood pressure participated in an eight-week mindfulness-based blood pressure reduction program, they significantly improved their scores on measures of self-awareness and adherence to a heart-healthy diet compared to a control group.
Authors of a Frontiers in Nutrition study reminded us of the importance of screening for plasma homocysteine levels to prevent stroke. High levels were positively associated with all-cause mortality. If folate and vitamin B12 levels were optimal, homocysteine levels were usually within range.
Finally, two new studies from Advances in Nutrition and Frontiers in Nutrition laud the importance of vitamin D for heart health. The first study suggests vitamin D supplementation be considered as a beneficial adjuvant therapy for managing lipid profile levels, especially in individuals with vitamin D deficiency. The second study found the need for vitamin D supplementation for those with deficiency to reduce atrial fibrillation risk.

A client recently came in in advance of her daughter's wisdom teeth removal, a rite of passage for most teenagers. The client knew her daughter would be prescribed antibiotics and wanted to stock up on probiotics and other anti-inflammatory supplements.
Our client asked Steve if he had any additional recommendations and he shared the Nutritional Concepts wisdom teeth extraction protocol. In addition to what the client already knew to have on hand (Acute Care, Quercetin, Bromelain and more...), she added all of the suggested items from the recommended list (some of which includes our protein powders - easy to add into a smoothie).
A few days later, the client reported back that the surgery was a success and her daughter had virtually no pain (only took Tylenol twice on the day of the surgery; no pain medications thereafter), a tiny bit of swelling that lasted about a day and no bruising. After two days, she was eating normally.
Compared to this teenager's two older siblings who needlessly suffered for days following their extractions (unfortunately the mother was not a client then), this surgery was a walk in the park!
It's worth mentioning that this teen had three out of four wisdom teeth impacted.
Whenever you have an upcoming surgery or medical procedure, let us know how we can best help you prepare so your recovery can be as quick, painless and easy as possible.
Did you have a great experience working with us? Please let others know by leaving a review here.

Chiropractic Helps an "Autistic" Child
In “Chicken Soup for the Chiropractic Soul“ there’s an account of a chiropractor who had families come in for maintenance / preventative care. One such family of five never brought in their middle child and one day the mother explained why.
When that daughter was 16 months old she had just begun to say mommy, daddy, smile, get up and sit down on her own. One day she had a throat infection, went on antibiotics and had a terrible reaction. After taking them she was listless, had glassy eyes, became withdrawn, said nothing, would continually move, or be in a complete standstill, totally oblivious of everything and everyone. The many specialists who they brought her to, told the parents she was autistic and to get her institutionalized.
After explaining this the front desk convinced the mother to let the chiropractor check the child for subluxations and see if her daughter would respond to care. He treated her three times a week for several weeks and then her nervous system began to work more efficiently. She was able to sit in the reception area while looking at pictures in a book. Then for the first time she went over to her mom during an adjustment and engaged with her by putting her arms around her and then kissed her. Three years later, with consistent care, the chiropractor was invited to this little girls first dance recital.
It’s amazing what the body can do when there is a better balance within the nervous system. That’s why it’s important for adults and children to be checked regularly for spinal subluxations. Chiropractic makes sure that all systems and nerve signals are working properly, for positive changes to occur. What health condition are you ready to let Chiropractic care help you with?
