Four Peaks Brewsletter

The Empty Bottle Was Half Empty, Tide Was Low and I Was Thirsty...

IT'S A CRUEL SUMMER

It's only the beginning of June 2011 and we've battled earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, tornadoes and flooding in the heartland, Chilean volcanoes, what's looking to be the largest forest fire in Arizona history, a deadly heatwave in the Northern States and even the sinking of the Titanic II on its maiden voyage.

Seems to me that we're probably a couple of cancelled rapture's behind on the year.  Sheesh, I haven't even included all of the crazy people out there (i.e. "Weiner-gate", the Gabby Giffords shooter, Gaddafi or North Korea) on that list.

Nope, what we need now is a big distraction, something huge...lets just talk about summer.

Ahh yes, summer in the Valley of the Sun.  You know how it is; the long, hot days, the equally unmerciful evenings and a 99% chance of not having a cloud in the sky for weeks at a time.  In other words the innate need to want to escape Phoenix early and often as many times as we can over the next 3 months!

And the best way to do this is to just follow the music, especially beginning this weekend with Circus Mexicus XX in Rocky Point.  Musician, tequila enthusiast and soccer player, Roger Clyne, spearheads this "little" festival just south of the border every summer and it continually grows into something bigger and better each year!  With this being their 20th Circus Mexicus, expect them to be pulling out all the stops.

The festivities will kick off this Friday night at JJ's Cantina with PH Naffah's annual Hot Dog & A Smile charity BBQ (with all proceeds go to benefit the children at Esperanza Para Los Nios Orphanage), and end on Sunday with the Maanathon Hangover Bash.  Don't worry, there will be plenty of live music--with the Peacemakers, Tramps & Thieves and The Hickman-Dalton Gang to name a few--as well as charity soccer in between to keep you busy!

If you don't feel like making the trek down Mexico way, just keep it local.  The venue 910 Live (just down the street of our Tempe location where the old Boston's once was) will be having a huge outdoor show this Friday showcasing several Valley favorites including Black Carl and What Laura Says beginning at 7:30 and lasting well into the evening.  Tickets are only $10 and Kilt Lifter will be served.

And that's just the beginning.  Whether you find yourself going on tour with Phish or Katy Perry or just driving to any number of the summer festivals around the country (including THIS ONE that Four Peaks will be taking part in!), remember to fill up that cooler with plenty of cans of Hop Knot, Kilt Lifter and Sunbru.  Their earth friendly, delicious and you probably won't find them in the other 49 states!

This week in the "Only Brews Source That Matters" we take a musical approach to all the articles.  You'll notice that each "Headline" will take you to the song from which the title derives, so have fun!  We also take a look at the Arizona microbrew scene in the Brewer's Blog, give you the Father's Day Brunch menus for both Four Peaks locations, and give you a quick set of "Brews Briefs"!  Alright we have a lot of things to get to so Let It Roll On Down the Highway.

Cheers,

Achin' To Be

I'm jealous of Portland, Ore., and of Denver, San Diego, Seattle and even little Asheville, N.C.

I'm jealous because they have thriving beer cultures. Beer culture, to me, is created when a community, a town or even a state embraces local craft beer, fostering a sense of pride and loyalty.

In Portland, craft beer has a larger market share than anywhere else in the country. Denver is host to the world's largest beer festival. San Diego is becoming a destination for not only the beach but for its beers.

Try to order a mass-produced light lager in parts of Seattle, and you'll be served a glass of water. Asheville is so into its local beer scene (eight breweries in a town of 80,000 people) that it has been named "Beer City" USA by the Brewers Association.

I didn't see a single Arizona town on the list of finalists.

Why?

Arizona is home to more than 20 breweries. Good breweries, award-winning breweries, with more on the way. It has some of the best beer bars in the country. And it is home to one of the largest homebrewing clubs in the United States.

But still we lag behind in terms of beer culture found in those other cities.

Maybe what Rob Fulmer, president of the Arizona Society of Homebrewers, says is true: We're too spread out, too homogenized, especially in Phoenix.

The common thread with the cities mentioned above is that each has a dense urban core, which tends to attract younger, more craft-oriented people. People who also take great pride in their local businesses.

But we have those things, too.

Maybe not to the extent of those other cities, but I think there is a great deal of local pride, even if we don't have a bustling downtown.

Our situation also has to do with location. It seems that a great majority of Arizonans are from somewhere else. Few things cause people to be loyal more than a good local beer. When someone moves to Arizona, it's hard to give up what you knew and jump on the bandwagon of a new beer.

Distributors know this and they bring in a variety of beers from out of state. That's great. But it may also limit the number of taps that could (and should)

go to local breweries.

The answer to the question may also be that there is no answer to the question.

As Ron Kloth, owner of the Papago Brewing Co. (one of the fine beer bars I mentioned earlier), said, "Beer culture is a matter of perception."

Beer bars in San Diego or Denver aren't better than those we have here, he said, and there aren't better breweries in other places either.

Arizona does quite well in national and international beer competitions. We're just not perceived as being a great place for good beer. Not yet.

The point is that we're a young industry here, but we're growing. The longer we stick around, the more fans craft beer will have. A beer culture doesn't sprout up overnight.

It needs to be nurtured, and that will take some time.

Which brings us to the Brewsletter equivalent of the "cut-out bin".  An unfortunate term that, back in the day, referred to "extra" record albums that were sold at discounted prices due to overselling by the label.  They literally had a notch "cut-out" of them to denote that they could not be sold back to the manufacturer.

As it is, I just have a few extra bits of info that I think you might want to read, I just don't have the space to fully promote them.  So where should we start...

ASU Women's Softball - Congratulations!  The 2011 Women's Softball World Series Champ's go to our own ASU Sun Devils after they swept Florida last night.  Let's see if our Men's Baseball Team can replicate that result when the 2011 Men's College World Series Super Regionals begin this Friday!

Hop Knot In Cans - We have recently updated our website to include all of the places currently selling our Hop Knot In cans throughout Arizona!  Bear in mind that certain locations have been known to sell out so please, feel free to call the establishment beforehand!  I cannot stress that enough!

"Where To Buy" Tab.

Birds n' Beers on 6/19 - The Nina Mason Rio Salado Audubon Society in downtown Phoenix will be holding their second in a year-long series called Birds N' Beers.  Every 3rd Thursday from 5:30pm until 7:30pm stop by to chill with a Four Peaks beer and learn a thing or two about nature.  This months' topic: Why Are They Doing That? Bird Mating Behaviors, it should be fun and informative!

ML209 Continues To Thrive - Our 1st foray into the world of malt liquor continues to pour at both Four Peaks locations!  Make sure you stop in and go for a big swim the 209 way!

The Return of 5 Questions - Was supposed to kick off this week but my chosen subject wasn't able to complete the task at hand in the time alotted.  Hopefully we can find someone who's up to the grilling I have in store next week so we can throw in a little more fun during these long summer months.
