Greetings!

June is here...what has happened to the first 5 months of the year? Wherever the time went, we hope you were able to spend some of it reading!

We are so enjoying seeing our customers back in our stores again! It's wonderful to hear about all the books you've been reading and which new books you are looking to read next. Due to supplier and publisher staff cutbacks, books have been slow arriving but we are thankful things are gradually returning to normal. Our store shelves are a little less full than usual and we thank you for your patience as we replenish our stock and increase our new book inventory.

Many new books are arriving this month and we invite you to come in and browse our selection. See below to find out what we have been reading and to find out about some of the new releases.

Father's Day is Sunday, June 21st and we have included some gift suggestions below. Books make wonderful gifts!

BARB'S PICK

Nanaimo Girl
by Prudence Emery

What an entertaining and hilarious memoir! The author, born in Nanaimo in the 1930s, lived a rip-roaring life working as a publicist all over Europe, Canada and the U.S. She drops the names of every celebrity you can imagine, but of course, she knew them all. I highly recommend this fascinating and fun read.

TOM'S PICK

The German Heiress
by Anika Scott

This well researched book of historical fiction is set in Germany, post WWII. It is told through the eyes of Clara Falkenberg, who is known as the Iron Fraulein. Clara, heiress and public figure in the Third Reich is on the run, pursued by the Allies for her activities during the war as head of the family steel works. Compelling reading for historical fiction fans.

MITZI'S PICK

The Gardener's Guide to Succulents
by Misa Matsuyama

This is a gorgeous book! The photography is stunning, the ideas are amazing, and it is well researched and written by a very passionate horticulturist who specializes in succulents, and displaying them.  It describes and gives basic information on the ease and growth of over 125 different succulents and cacti. Ideas for indoor gardens and group plantings are offered, and as well the care and maintenance required for successful results. This is a must have for succulent and cacti lovers. Prepare to be inspired!

RACHAEL'S PICK

Writers & Lovers
by Lily King

Writers writing about writers and writing. We're warned against it, understandably, because not everyone is wowed by such a solitary, introspective act. But for this reader, Lily King's novel is a gorgeous, introspective dive into the angst of a struggling author coming to know herself through romantic mishaps and grief, balanced against the need to pay her rent and crippling debts. King also pens some of the most realistic depictions of restaurant work I have ever read.
JAN'S PICK

Deep River
by Karl Marlantes

A fascinating account of one family who flee Russian tyranny in Finland in the early 1900's and emigrate to the Pacific Northwest. Some of the characters are loosely based on Finnish folklore. The most compelling fiction I've read so far this year - I was up until 4am finishing it!

ANTONIA'S PICK

Circe
by Madeline Miller

The pages of Circe by Madeline Miller are spilling with gilded light, from the very first to the very last. Circe, daughter of Helios, a Titan god of the sun, grows up in the halls of her father's home among moody immortals, dazzling nymphs, and vengeful, insecure gods. Upon discovering that Circe has a growing gift for witchcraft, the threatened Zeus banishes her to a deserted island to live out her life in isolation. Throughout her story, Circe experiences empathy for mortals, deep love and heartbreak, consequence, self sacrifice, and resilience. A most beautiful story, shining light on a character who finally has her side of the story told.
